Does anyone have any pictures of what a glow plug controller looks like from a 82 6.2L? Also will a controllers from a 85 work on a 82? Are injection pumps interchangeable from those years also?

I don't have any pictures, but I can answer a couple of your other questions. :)

The controller from an '85 will work, but you will have to modify the wiring a bit. In '84 or '85 they went to a completely different setup which has a glow plug relay with an integral controller. It is actually a much better controller than the earlier model. Some people do the upgrade to the late model controller because the early ones were rather bad and fail fairly often (not that the later model ones don't fail).

There are many different models of injection pump... Bottom line is that they will all interchange from '82 right up until the computer controlled 6.5 came out (I think it was in '94), but performance will be slightly different if you use a different pump (sometimes for the better :D ).

That's the later model glow plug controller... The early model threads into the head (unlike the later model which is held on by two bolts) and doesn't have an integral glow plug relay.

high sierra is correct the earlier version is round at the back of the drivers side head screwed into a plate that is bolted to the head. it has a six or so wiring loom with a plug on top and the wires are all small , the relay on this style is on the drivers side fender and has two large gauge wires and two small wires. my brothers 84 still has this style in it has n't changed it for ten years runs everyday in cold climate. i changed mine out every two years and finally rewired to the latter model , works like a champ.

For a picture of an old style GP Contoller, go to eBay, and under automotive parts and assessories, type in "glow plug controller", and several hits will come up. Look at the hit for an 1982 6.2L GMC engine and you will find a picture. You can also try several of the online diesel supply houses; they show pictures.

If you come up with a foolproof way to extract the old style controller from the engine, please post back. They are easy to break trying to remove.

Even though the pumps all fit, you don't want a pump built before 1985 - unless it's already been rebuilt and updated. Standard practice used to be to install a metal tag on any updated pump.
The early pumps had short life-spans until the EID update. After 1985, all the pumps came new with it.

The HD J-code pumps push more fuel than the LD C-code pumps. So, if you put a C-code pump onto a J-code engine you will lose some power - sometimes as much as 20 horse. I'll put a list at the bottom of this message if you need to ID a pump.

In regard to the controllers - the old-style controllers don't work as well at certain temperatures - as the later ones do. But - as far as being unreliable? I've got five 6.2s with the old style - and never had one fail.
Of course - I've heard the old glow-plug systems were terrible in the older Ford diesels too - and my 85 F250 with 6.9 diesel has always worked fine - and still does.
