I am having a bit of a conundrum with my parking brakes recently. I had the rear drivers side parking brake cable snap. I replaced the cable and ever since I cannot get them to hold properly. I used to have amazing parking brake holding power. It would hold the truck even under moderate throttle, now the truck rolls when just in drive.

Is there some type of adjustment I can do on the cables themselves? From what I understand the actuator in the cab is self adjusting, but clearly that isn't working well. I have a really hard time believing it is the pads or any hardware in the axle as the brakes worked flawlessly up until the cable failure. I am getting tired of chasing this around and pulling the rotors on and off to verify things. Plus I'd assume a new cable would be shorter than an older stretched cable, but it got worse with a new cable.

Is there something I am missing here? Is there a place I can adjust the cables manually outside of the actual parking shoes?

Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling



  1. Hold the park brake pedal in the FULL upward position.

  1. Pull rearward on the front park brake cable until the tension is released from the tool (1) installed in the pedal assembly.
  2. Remove the tool (1).
  3. Slowly release the park brake cable until it returns to its original position.
  4. Release the park brake pedal.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Apply and release the park brake pedal 3 times.

Apply park brake. Look at levers on backing plate. Should be equally extended. Now, release park brake. Are both levers fully retracting?
One lever is at bottom of backing plate, other is inverted.
