Hello all,

Last weekend it was 4-6 degrees each night. I had my 2005 GMC Sierra Duramax in the garage and didn't drive it for two days. It was around 20 degrees in the garage on Sunday. The truck started just fine but when I went to drive it I had no power steering or brakes. I checked the fluid levels and they were fine. I let the truck warm up checking it every one minute. After about 5 minutes the steering worked but was a little noisey. The brakes worked fine too. After a couple more minutes the steering quited down to normal

Anyone know if this is normal or what the problem might be. Far as I'm concerned it should not be as 20 degrees is not severe.

Thanks in advance.

The pressure valve (for whatever reason) may have stuck in a low pressure position on the power steering pump. This shouldn't happen, but if it does it again, jab the brakes real hard to get the p/s pump to free itself up.

BTW, the power steering pump pumps pressure for the steering system and the power brakes booster (called a hydroboost).

Rt,

Sounds very possible I'll give it a try. This has only happened once. I'll take it to the dealer if it does it again. It did seem temperature related so there might be some water in there making the valve (if there is one) stick.

Thanks very much.

I had the same problem this morning but its 41 dergees. I have been in much colder weather with no problem. I started the truck put it in gear and started down the driveway and realized I had no power steering then realized I had no power brakes. Shut off the engine to check the belt and fluid levels and for leaks but found nothing. Started the engine and everything was back to normal. Any other ideas?

Had that problem back in the summer. Mine actually failed twice. I took it in to the dealer and they put a new P/S pump on. No more problems. Service writer told me there was a TSB on the problem.

I've noticed the PS pump making alot of noise after a long haul on the freeway while towing. Upon exiting and then making a hard turn I notice the noise and more steering input required. Is this an indicator of the pump going bad?

Ditto. I have the exact same symptom. Not a pleasant feeling when towing a heavy 5er. Took it to the dealer and got the could not duplicate line. I feel it in the brakes also. There is something wrong and the only way to show them would be to take a tech camping with me. I think I'm going to take it back and yell safety concerns until they replace the pump and the brake boost.

Question for you guys. Can you put your brake peddle to the floor when at a complete stop such as in your driveway?. I can and I here allot of anti lock surging. Just wondering if it is normal to be able to push the peddle all the way to the floor.

When it rains it pours.

Had the same problem. Drove all day the day before no problems. Next morning started at approx. 38' temp and no steering nor brakes. Checked belts and pump all seemed okay. Took a shot and replaced pump. A few cuss words and bruised knuckles and all seems to be back to normal.

Brakes a better than ever. Thinking back, I had noticed that the brakes were a little spongey at start up, every once in a while. Not all the time. I'll post again if my proble ever comes back.

UPDATE No Power Steering/Brakes

Well it just happened again. Zero brakes and steering. This time it was at 47 degrees so now I know it's not temperature dependent. The common factor is that this has happened both times after the truck has sat for three or more days without driving. It's at the dealer now. I'll let you all know what comes of this. I was able to get the brakes and steering back by revving the engine 5 times to 1800 RPM for about 3-4 seconds.

One or the other?

So far mine has been working fine since I replaced the p/s pump:) . I've drove it everyday since and hadn't noticed anything. No noise, no spongy brakes, and good p/s. (Hopefully not jinx'in anything here):h .) I understand after talking to other people with these systems that it can be either the hydro boost or the p/s pump causing the same indications. Also air in the system (leaky o ring, hose connection) could cause it as well. Don't know if there is a test to figure it out. Good thing there's only a few parts to the system. Just hope it doesn't ever arrise hauling any loads down the road:eek: .

Have just been through the same situation, no brakes, no steering (very cold out). Let it sit for a day and still nothing. Had to tow it to the dealer, after it got there it was fine. They kept it for a day and left it outside again that night and it still was fine the next morning. Dealer didn't have much input I mentioned the flow valve and they said it was a possibilty. I got them to give me a diagram of the pump so I could see where the valve sits in the pump so that if it happens again I can tap on the pump to maybe unstick the valve. Hope it doesn't happen again but if so I will let you all know what happened.
