Was at the CAT dealer today and the parts person mentioned a Donaldson Company filter that CAT uses as a primary fuel filter on some of their truck engines. He said that he thought it was available for GM diesel. He got the Duramax GM and crossed it and sure enough they make one. The number is P550517. I checked their website and it appears they are a distributor and min purchase is 12 filters. Could not get a price since I am an individual and could not get registered. I tried to find a dealer in the DFW area of TX and have not located a nearby dealer. Sent them an email to get specs, price, and dealer availability.

The could be a viable alternative to the OEM filter. The prices have gotten outragious. O'Reilly is $30.99 for the Wix, Aitozone is $39.99 for the Duetch, GM is $41.09, and the cheapest I have found is $22.00 and change at Diesel Injection Service.

I also bought a CAT filter head and it turns out the fittings are all metric thread and I need barb fittings for a 3/8 fuel hose. They seem to be a 14 mm but not sure of that yet. I hope CAT has them when I check Monday because they are not available anywhere else I have checked.

This filter from Donaldson is a replacement for the GM filter. It was announced in their new products letter they send out and it is on the website as a Donaldson filter for the Duramax 6.6 diesel. The company makes many filters and also markets and sells filter media to other filter companies. Since CAT uses their filters as a primary fuel filter and CAT requires 2 micron filters to protect their injectors on the truck engines I would suspect this is a quality product. Stewart Stevenson also uses their products. These are some pretty heavy hitters. The military HMMV uses them also.

I will let everyone know what I find out about this filter. Smartfix provided the link to their website above.

The filter head (base) is a 1N-3789. I did not get the plug. The parts man here spent to time to find the other parts. Here are the numbers.

SP-0537 WASHER; 9M-1974 WASHER; 6N-4414 COVER; 1P-0436 GASKET; 7B-2742 BOLT; 7B-2742 BOLT (One of the bolt numbers is wrong on my invoice because the bolts are two different dia.) I have to get the plug and two fittings so will let you know about that tomorrow.

The fittings for the filter head are not metric like I initially thought but a #6 that is made for an oring and flare tubing or hose fitting. They gave them to me so I don't have a part number. I am not sure yet how I am going to adapt this setup but I think I will go to a hose shop and have them build me fuel hoses with the hose end fittings on one end and nothing on the other end so I can go over the tube and clamp it like it is now. I might try to flare the OEM tube end and install a flare nut on it to connect to the hose. The end at the valve will be clamped on no matter what I do since the valve has a barb connection. When I finish this project I will try to post some picts.

The plug # is 9S-4182. The invoice shows an O-RING but I don't remember seeing one on the plug. I will let you know.

To get a 3/8 hose I had to change the filter flare fittings to a #6 to #8 fitting. This screws into the housing with the #6 side and provides a hose fitting to the #8 side with a 3/8" id hose. The hose will be clamped onto the OEM tube. The part # will be provided as after I get a clarification of the invoice part #'s, probably tomorrow.
