Well gang, ever since I replaced my stolen radar detector (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60846) I've been looking for a way to hardwire it to the truck.

I've already tapped into the power lead for the overhead console lights, but it seems insufficient to power my Valentine One. Also, I would like one that is switched with the ignition too.

I know (or at least I thought there was) some leads on the passenger side near the front door. Can anyone help me with finding the correct place to tap?

thanks in advance!

I'd really like to not have to drop the dash. There's a huge wiring harness on the passenger side when the door is opened. Is there a sufficient switched power source there?

Mine runs off two wires in the harness for the rearview mirror. Plenty of juice, switched power, works great.

I got a connector from a guy on Corvette Forum. It was cheaper than a connector kit from Valentine, and a heck of a lot less wiring. Put one in my C6 and in my 2500HD. PM me if you need a link.

There are some power points in the fuse block behind the parking brake, unscrew the nut, pop it off and there are a number of male plugs at the bottom. Get a meter to determine hot and ground. I've got my Excort and Sirius both hooked into the power supplies there.

You can then run the wires up the left side of the dash, up the Pillar or up then along the front of the dash.

I've heard cops say that before, Unit453. Please don't take it that I'm challenging you or anything, because I'm curious.

Why are radar detectors inneffective? My Escort generally gives me at least 3/4 mile warning. I'll agree that with laser, you're toast. However, I successfully avoided a 14! squad car speed trap a couple years back with my Escort. I had been passing most doing 15 mph over the limit when I picked up Ka-band. I slowed to the limit and never had a problem. Everyone I had just passed looked at me crazy as they passed me and got caught.):h

Maybe it was blind luck--I'm really not sure.

There was a thread about this a few months ago by Andrew Fessler getting stopped for speeding. i explained it all in pretty good detail. Lemme see if I can find the thread.

There has to be some radar units out there still in service that transmit signal even when the officer isn't actively "gunning" people.

For example: Out here in the boonies of Montana, I'll routinely pick an officer's radar up 3/4 to 1 mile before meeting him on a two-lane road. The signal meter on my Escort gradually increases and generally hits full strength as soon as he's in view. I know for a fact he hasn't been actively "gunning" people because we're the only ones out on the road!

When an officer is actively using the radar and he's within range of my detector, I get bursts of more radar strength.

I'm sorry, but I think the high-end radar detectors are useful. Maybe I'm ignorant...

Its probably the cop using the radar up the road from you taggin cars in front of you whether you can see him yet or not. You were catching quick bursts. Or maybe he actually left it runnin wide open. I would never run it wide open. All you're doing is advertising to the public where you are. There are many ways to out smart those with detectors.

I lived in NY and I can say most guys are quick on the radar on/off there. In Wisconsin and Michigan, they almost always leave them on full. With my V1 I can pick them up over a mile away.
I've had my share of tickets (25yrs old w/ a 996 superhawk) and have definiltely learned that when you DO get pulled over, be polite, respectful and it'll usually fair better in the long run.
That is unless you were REALLY speeding like in my last ticket. Officer even asked why I stopped..

Thanks for the link on getting power. I'd like to avoid having my V1 cord hand down across the dash.

Then that must be what the officers in my area do, Unit 453--they leave their radar on full transmit power all the time.

Fine by me...):h

I only usually even plug in the V1 when I'm going on trips. Boppin around town I don't bother. And it has saved me more than once in light to moderate traffic conditions as I picked up signals ahead of me as others were hit with radar.

It seems to me that most of the officers here in South Texas leave their radar units running all the time.

Yes, I do understand better now, 453. I appreciate the help. I guess for me, it boils down to this--if you're going rediculously fast, nothing is going to save you.

I bought the detector to avoid those "stupid" type tickets for only a few miles over the limit but still significantly impact your driving record, especially a young guy like me. Maybe that's false reasoning, but it's worked so far...

I have never tested a radar detector. i used them when I was growing up and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I was wrong.
