I just got some smooth flares to replace my textured black ones. They were silver and I am going to paint them black to match the truck. I have a question regarding prep as I intend to paint them myself but wanted to clarify things. I will be using a HVLP gun. Other treads mainly dealt with painting the textured plastic and these are already painted, so I wasn't sure how in depth I had to go to prep these. The flares are in really good condition and don't know if it really needs a coat of primer.

So far, I
  • wiped down with grease and adhesive remover
  • scuffed with scotch brite maroon pad - should be 360-400 grit

I intend to now
  • cover with 2 coats of base
  • cover with 2 coats of clear
Can I get away with just shooting the base/clear or would you guys suggest doing the primer first anyways?

I'd put a coat on there to be on the safe side...but if you're good at the gambling boat, go for it. I have painted plenty of plastics with my HVLP gun with no primer. I've got a Sharpe and love it. It takes patience, it will not happen fast if you want a good job...take your time.

No need for primer if the paint on there now is in good shape. Souds like you have it covered.
