Hello, i have a 95 gmc with a 6.5 non turbo (yes one of the odd balls) letter "p" engine with a 5-speed. How can i get more power with out spending alot of money? i pull a 8000 pound 5th wheel with it, it does ok but when the hills come, don't get behind me. I haved the truck now for 8 years and it is been farily good to me. But with my camping habit, i need more power.

well, the most obvious thing would be put a turbo on it. However, I'm guessing thats more than you want to spend, in which case I'd start with the same things you do to any engine. Intake and exhaust. Maybe one of the vendors sells a non turbo performance chip? It seems like there's still potential power from a computer even without the turbo.

Easy as hittin' yer local boneyard, strippin' the turbo and exhaust manifolds and PCM off a 6.5TD, slippin' the stuff under yer hood, and then you can start playin' with the big boys - remote-mount FSD, gages, hotchip, exhaust, cooling, charge-air cooler, the sky's the limit.

Or, maybe a Cummins 5.9...................

yeah maybe you could find a member of this forum who has the spare parts you need to make that a turbo 6.5 many of us do, jsut by finding deals 6.5 take outs or wrecks or what not i happen to have everything you need short of a good turbo, but unless you live in wisconsin it'll do you no good. fill out your signature and let us know where your from maybe someone can help

I'll have to agree with gmctd on the ole 5.9 swap...then again unless you do everything yourself and the get motor dirt cheap, it can be an expensive swap...

I saw an ad...

from a guy in maybe Utah that wanted to sell a complete turbo for a 6.5 for $300

it was another forum so I'd check here first as I have found this is the place to get the best info..... now if I could stop reading what I need to do to my 6.5td and go do it....

The NA and TURBO engines are identical - get the turbo, exhaust manifolds, and PCM, field-strip your engine, dress it out with the turbo stuff.

I guess really we need to find your budget and then work from there, to you what is "not a lot of money" is that $100 or $1500....
