I got temporary access to this used S60 turbocharger from Quadstar Tuning. The new owner attempted to find specs on what he was purchasing, but came up empty handed. He did learn that this one was intended for a manual transmission – which could explain (what appears to be) a micro size turbine housing. He dropped it off here so that I could look it over and get some measurements and photos. I’m comparing my measurements to Turbonator’s wheel measurement thread for identification. Since we can’t seem to find any decent information for this turbo anywhere, I’m posting this up for everyone’s reference.

There is no ID plate. Instead we have this nicely machined advertising plate.

The turbo is an HX40.

The standard HX40 would have a 64/76, 12 blade turbine wheel. This one has the larger 67/76 wheel with 10 blades. The wheel should flow well with a big enough housing.

The compressor wheel is a 7 blade. Being an odd number of blades, it is difficult to get an accurate measurement with the wheel mounted on the shaft, but I believe it to be the 60/86 with extended tips.

I’ll try to get a better idea what housing this is. Holset rates them by CM^2. Some of the aftermarket sources list them by A/R. There is no A/R or CM^2 number cast into the housing to reference. I may try to measure and calculate A/R and then convert using these ballpark numbers I found on a British site:

HX40- 18cm- A/R 1.05, 16cm- A/R 0.92, 14cm- A/R 0.85

My initial measurements seem to indicate this housing A/R is 0.82. If my measurements are accurate, and the conversion above is accurate, that would make this about a 13 CM^2 housing - which I don't think exists from Holset. Perhaps that explains why there is no size cast into the housing?
I may try measuring one more time in a slightly different area to see if I can get the same results. A/R should be consistent through the housing.
