Well just the other day I read a tread about the oil level being low from the factory in the rearend. I already had 30,000 miles on mine so
I figured I better check it and change it. Sure enough about two quarts came out and a lot of metallic shavings on the drain plug. I went back with 4 quarts of castrol sythetic 75/90. I just hope I didn't wait too long. Should have read up on it a year ago I guess. I hope others check theirs sooner.

I replaced my cover with the Mag Hy-Tec today. I drained every bit of fluid out, even jacking one side up than the other to get it out of the tubes. All I got was a little over 2 qts. It was pretty dirty with a lot of break in crap in it. I would think it should hold 4-5. I could not find a capacity in the owners manual. It has 7 qts of Amsoil Synthetic in it now. Turck is 3 weeks old with 5K miles.

You guy do know that the fluid level has to be 3/8-5/8" "BELOW" the filler plug hole????? Thats explained in your, owners manual! Buddy of mine filled his all the way up, and 15k later is have diff problems, the 'ol binding when turning, dont know if thats why, but gm says they need to be low,cuz of the synthetic/clutches.

The MAG HYTEC differential cover adds an additional 3 qts of fluid to what is suppose to be a 4.2 Qt fill from the factory. It is NOT!!! overfilled

In the tech world it is feast or famine. I guess we have both seen it at one time or another.

I changed mine at 2400 miles. I only got about 2.5 quarts out of it. Replaced with 4 quarts of Mobil 1 75W-90.

Also have seen, 1/2 to 3/4th of a inch below the fill hole. Close enough...

Yep, mine too.

I got an email from an RV buddy who had read on TDP about this factory problem. Checked mine, couldn't reach the fluid, only about 2 qts. drained out. Thanks to you all for the guidance on capacity. I must have had a senior moment, cuz I couldn't find it in the manual. 4 qts of Mobile 1 in there now, appears to be about 1/2 inch below the inspection hole.

PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a "REASON" they are low, below the fill hole, look in your owners manual, or call gm.

The capacity according to GM is 4.2 qts. This is an empty fill which leaves it 1/2 inch below the fill plug.....after fluid gets in the tubes. I drained a little over 2 qts after jacking each side of the truck up to drain the tubes. A lot of others have drained this amount as well. There is no way that is correct. Mag Hytec advertises there cover holds 8 qts for this application...4 more than stock. Anyone draining and refilling a stock cover with 4 qts is adding the correct amount.
