Here is my vin: 1gchk23295f841082. How do I use this to know the manufacture date and the version Duramax that is in my truck?

yes, ALL 2005s have an LLY, its only the 2004s that had the LB7 and LLY "2004.5"

8th digit of the vin = LLY

I remember reading somebody's detailed post of the timeline of the Duramax engines and their specifications. From that I grasped that my engine was a LLY. But, wasn't there a point in '05 when the LLY went from 300 to 310 hp and from 520 to 590 ft-lb torque while both were still being referred to as LLY's?

2004 early the trucks were lb7's with 300 hp, around april (when I got my truck) the lly engines came out with 310 hp...My Uncle and I seem to get new trucks the same year, he took delivery of his in December and ended up with the lb7...he ws dissapointed and will probably get the lbz this year...(wish I could too, but I can't get a new truck for a few more years, besides I seem to have one of the only lly's without major problems).
Hope this helps...

590 FT LBS? I thought the LLY's had 605 FT LBS?

04.5 LLY has 590
05 LLY has 605

In real life you will not notice the additional 15 ft lbs

The question I had is how can you tell from the vin the date of manufacture? Also, how can you tell when the split occured between the LLY versions?

The LLY has always been 310 HP, the LB7 is 300 HP

The LLY Torque split happened when Cummins came out with the "600". GM upped the LLY torque from 590 to 605 to beat the Cummins, which lead Cummins to up the torque on the "600" to 610 to beat the Duramax... lol...

Again in real life you won't notice the difference, but I believe the 05 LLY's are 605 Torque and the 04.5 LLY's are 590.

This is correct. I may have that wrong in that write up.

LB7 - 520tq 300hp
04.5 LLY - 590tq 310hp
05 LLY - 605tq 310hp
06 LLY - same
06 LBZ - 650tq 360hp

You can check the month & year your truck was completed by looking at the white sticker on the edge of the driver's door. In one corner it will have the month & year of manufacture.

Guess we'll have to call this "BOD" (born on date).

Anyone want to take a guess what the 07's will be? I'm guessing a little lower than the 06's.
