Well I am ready to special order a new Chevy 2500HD LT, LWB, CC, 4x4, with the Duramax and Allison Trans. But for the last month I've been kinda waiting for more info on the LLY. Should I wait for the LLY option or just order the truck with the LB7? I don't plan on towing or hauling much, but do plan on adding a 6" or 8" lift with 35" or 37" tires. The color is between White and Silver Birch. I'm kinda thinking of white and adding some custom paint.

Thank for your input this forum rocks!

If you are planning on power mods you may have to wait a while for them to become available for the LLY.

The LB7 turbochargers seem to be very solid and reliable. The LLY turbos are mostly unknown.

Other than these two factors I see no reason not to wait for the LLY. Personally I like how the new turbo can create backpressure to help the engine warm up. I realize that it's hardly a factor in Florida but it sure would be nice up here. --SS

I am in the same predicament as you. I been have waiting to see if the LLY will be available or shelved by GM. FYI: I called GM today and the rep. told me that the LLY would be an option for the new 3500 that is scheduled for release around January. He did not have an answer to if the LLY would be available for the 2500. I imagine that it would as it would seem to be a waste of $$ if it was only available for the 3500. I am not afraid of the modifcations as this an updated version of a great engine. I don't need my truck till next spring for towing our TT and I would be extremely upset to pay 40k plus knowing that a better engine is just around the corner. The answer to the questions surrounding the LLY will hopefully be answered soon. Definitely worth the wait.

BamaFan Why buy the first year of a new design ???? There are always bugs to work out...

Makes sense to me look at the 01 Dmax.Too much money to hope that it is better and not a bunch of new problems that have to be worked out.I was trying to remember the mileage that GM said that the Duramax would go without major service 250,000 maybe? not sure but it was a lot HA HA.On second thought maybe they think injectors are just a regular service part that will be replaced a few times before you need major service
I say in joke but

What was wrong with the 01's? I have an early one and at 70,000 the belt idler tensioner is on it's way out, other than that no problems.(knock on wood). Is the LLY a new design or the logical improvement on an existing one? It seems that the LLY fixes the known short comings of the LBY. The turbo to me is the only real question IMHO. Personally I'm not a fan of EGR either, but I'd bet that can be gotten around. I would also bet that with all of the publicity Ford has gotten with their turbo, GM's will be solid. Of course I like new things, that's why I bought an 01 when they came out.

Hi Voodoo,

All Ha, Ha, aside - My LB7 is to be born next week, I hope. Build date - week of Nov.24th.

Do you suppose It'll have Coke cans, Party hats & Turkey Bones in the Doors???????

I'm with those that are a little leary of new changes - even thou Some of the changes are supposed to help Tech's access vital area's faster & easier and ++ hp etc.

I've been reading everything I can find & talked to as many owners that I can about the Duramax & Allison & I've had an awful lot of (GOOD - WORDS) and (Much Praise) about the current engine.....& I'm finally ready to get a Truck Now!
God, please let me get a GOOD one. (My wife says it's my !'st new one & my Last )

I don't want to wait another year or two to see how these changes are really going to affect the Current Motor. If I went and ordered an LLY all my efforts over the last few years will have been for naught.......That's what I feel.(For me anyway).
But, inside I do feel that GM will put out a good engine w/ the LLY & probably very few troubles, most likely.
But, right now, I Don't Want To Take The Chance...But that's just me.
Se ya, Paul

P.S. My LB7 is BLACK----Will it come out an LLY in White!?

Gettin Close now "Howard".........!!!!!!

Get the LB7 so there will be an extra LLY for me.

I talked to my dealer yesterday and still NO dealer trade, 3 trucks I told him about have been driven and have lots of miles.

He said he got a confirmation and build date for an 04 GMC 2500 x-cab w/ the LLY motor, delivery date 1-14-04.

I also posted on the 04 3500 SRW will be in all 3 cab sizes.

I went with the LB7. Here's why:

1. No EGR and no cat. It is extremely illegal (yet necessary) to remove these devices -- why risk it? With the LLY you will always have higher EGT's -- or you will be illegal. Not a good choice. Strict legal enforcement is only a Democrat away.

2. From what I have heard the LLY does have more servicable fuel injectors -- that is an advantage. Both the LB7 and LLY will, however, need larger aftermarket injectors if performance is a consideration.

3. Neither stock turbo will be adequate for serious performance, so the new turbo is not really an advantage. In fact, it may be a disadvantage as the new technology could complicate its replacement.

Personally, I look at the LB7 to LLY the same as Mustang owners did the 5.0 to the 4.6 -- not a good thing. This might be the end of an era -- hopefully it is not.

LLY.

The only thing about my truck that has me worried is the injectors, and making them easier to replace is a very good idea.

For those of you a sea level faster turbo response may not seem like a big deal, but it would be great up here.

I'm staying 100% stock for the duration of the warranty, so there'll be pleanty of time for the aftermarket to come up with mods before I want them.

Doesn't matter though, I'll be driving my LB7 for at least 10 more years.

Did not mean to imply there was really anything wrong with the 01's but since you asked there were a few problems that a few people seemed to have, here are a few I can think of right off.belt tensioner, soft injector seats till mid 02 production?,shifty allison, high pressure pump regulator, block heater setting codes. These are a few of the problems that I can think of as I type.I am sure that other members can chime in with a lot more but don't we are not trying to bash our trucks and most are things the dealer has or can fix .What I have found is "most" mfg's send there product to the general public for the final "trial" at the customer's expense and get feedback from the dealer.I bet it is usually a lot cheaper than to wait and do more testing, loss of market share and have to call it a 02 instead of 01.This is the game most mfg's play imho we have the biggest, baddest, most hp,most torque, toughest, longest lasting, largest load, most trailering ability, etc etc etc you get the message. Now what they don't tell you unproven, had to rush into production to beat the others to the punch?,cost a fortune to repair if not under warranty, don't have a lot of properly trained techs that can repair it for you[they will learn on your truck]
etc etc etc. Now all that said you can see that I hate to be conned or a g pig for GM or anyone else for that matter let someone else help them fix their problems before I buy ,unless it's free
.The cost of buying a first year model could be huge if it's a dud and GM will do nothing for you it's your loss, just so you can say you had it first.I wonder how many 01 owners would trade there drivetrain for a 02 or 03 at no charge if that was possible with same miles etc as theirs, just to get rid of some known problems.I was a service tech for 20+ years mostly with a international mfg[not automotive] and seen this over and over money comes before the customer everytime and a lot of the time the customer pays dearly. Most of the time in the business I was in a new release has issues some very small some very large, as time goes on they are resolved type 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc or it is discontinued. The best one to buy was always the proven product not the newest unproven unless they are trying to cut cost on the proven product
"been there done that" another story.Sorry about the rant <IMG onMouseOver="this.style.cursor='hand'" onMouseOut="this.style.cursor=''" alt='Click on image to open in new window' onClick="win

Thanks guys for all the help. The votes were closer than I would have expected. Anyway I will try and get to my dealer in the morning to place my order. I might not have much of a choice between the LB7 or LLY at this point, it looks like anything that is special ordered now will be the LLY. I just hope it will be a good one. Next is the waiting.......and more waiting.

Buy a used `01. Every 01 I've ever driven, and I've driven more than a dozen 01's and 2's, would run the doors off the 02's and 03's. My 01 when it was stock, ran better than my 03 does with the intake chip and exhaust. Wieght might have something to do with it too, but to drive them both they're night and day different trucks.

One of the best pieces of advice a friend gave me when I was looking at a diesel was to never buy the first year of a new/improved engine. Luckily, I didn't go with the new PowerStroke. I have another friend that did and he has had nothing but problems. Granted, there is always a chance for getting a lemon - regardless. Still though, I think the chances are much smaller if you go with proven technology.

VooDoo,

I went with the LB7 to avoid the cat and egr. You get the Allsion upgrades if the truck is an '04. I also went with Silver Birch (from a white '01) and I really like the color.

Regards and good luck,

Bob
