LLY Injector Noise

I have a 2004 1/2 GMC 2500 HD. I have been witnessing an injector (pretty sure thats what it is) noise above 2500-2600 RPM when at operating temp. The truck is fairly stock except fer pcv reroute and lbz mouthpeice. Right when i bought it (about 3 months ago, 88000 miles) i noticed nothing took a trip to mn (put on about 1200 miles mixed driving 55mhp to a run with a 6.0 ford down the highway at the speed governer fer a few miles) and never noticed anything. about a month after having the truck i took a trip to see the gf at school about 150 miles away and when i hit the interstate (70 miles into the trip) was passing a semi (runnin about 85ish with 245's then) and i noticed a louder than normal ticking comming from the firewall that seemed timed with the injectors. it would come and go then. awhile down the road i installed a predator programmer and when i would go through the gears from a stop i could hear the noise come in (about 25-2600 rpm) before each shift. Now i have about 98000 miles on the truck and i can make the noise just going down the road and manually holding a gear to get it into that 25-2600 rpm + range (only at operating temp when cold doesnt seem to be as loud) and it stands out i could take a sound clip sometime if yall want. I had my boss ride with me one day (Service department manager who is very nowledgeable) and he agrees its not normal and thinks its an injector problem. He said in a few months we could probably throw a set of injectors in it to fix it (2 year unlimited mileage service contract) but i am just curious if anyone had the same problem and had a solid fix. Truck runs good everwhere else and even when its noisy. No excessive smoke none at idle a little puff (very translucent) when i step it down (stock programming havent had the predator for awhile) i have noticed when taking off from work on a cold engine just a couple times (shortly after returning the truck from stock when i sent the programmer back) it smoked quite a bit but after it warmed up never noticed anything. I have done alot of research online and found posts on other forums about "GM Techs" who say the duramaxes get rid of the pilot injection at the same rpm that all do it but i agree with the origninal posters that have ridden in other duramaxes that are not as loud.

I also had a good friend (owns a small general/performance diesel shop in town) and he agrees that this is not a normal injector noise but suggested to me to check things like valve clearances and fuel pressure and balance rates. Have not done them yet as book time on checking valves is somewhere around 8+ hours. My friend also can bench test flow of injectors but this would seem kind of worthless to me as the truck runs good and no codes. So, so far my only complaint is excessive noise.

I am looking forward to your ideas as to what it could be and suggestions or things to check. Thanks for your input in advanced and sorry again for such a long post.

Sounds like the pilot injection turning off. I think it turns off at 2500rpm's. My truck has what I consider to be normal diesel clatter until 2500rpm's and then the pilot injection kicks out and it changes note... louder and more knock than clatter. Just throwing it out there, I'm sure others will chime in.

Mine gets really loud at those rpms as well. I was told the same thing as backwoodsfarm. Its a normal noise. You could always get the balance rates checked just for good messure

see ive found other posts elsewhere about the same but it wasnt near as loud when i bought it...and when i first noticed it it would come n go holding the same speed, throttle position n all. it would get louder all of a sudden then go. all on flat highway. and when its cold it doesnt get noisy.

EDIT: After i got home from the first time i noticed it i put a new fuel filter on it hoping maybe something went through the filter (maybe went bad er something). not knowing when the last time the filter was replaced i figured it was a good idea to change it anyways.

The injectors sound about like a older cummins 12 valve

Sure sounds like pilot injection turning off. Check your balance rates - you can do that with your Predator.

Throw a full quart of Power Service Diesel Kleen in your tank - that stuff will reduce a lot of injector noise.

Check the injector harness where it runs over the alternator bracket - it's zip tied to the bracket and has been known to wear through and cause all sorts of problems. Undo the zip tie, check the harness, repair anything damaged, then get a piece of 5/8" heater hose, split it, and use it to insulate the harness... then zip tie it back in place.

Mine does the same thing. 125K miles. Still runs fine, sputter's sometimes, and lot's of loping when it's cold.

Yeah i just noticed that this mornin i got to work so it was warmd up (25 mile trip) but i parkd n let it cool down a sec n startd lopin a lil...idk it wasnt this loud goin down the highway when I first got it...

My situation with the increased injector noise didn't occur until I had unhooked the batteries during my recent fuel filter change. This is the same procedure I use every time I replace the fuel filter, but it's the first time where the injector sound changed. My truck has 95K on it, and hasn't shown any codes. It also does increase with temperature rise as mentioned by some of the other members.
I'm curious if any one else has experienced the same condition, and if so what was the correction for it?

Try this-
1)Change fuel filter (clogged filters can make the truck do all sorts of strange things)
2)Check injector harness. Repair/insulate if needed
3)Ice pick #2 and #7
4)Use fuel additive. I'm partial to 2 stroke oil, a quart per tank, but whichever you prefer
5)Check balance rates if you want some piece of mind. I think they will check fine but just in case
Good luck!

Well ive been running power service through it for sum time now and no noticable change... drove another dmax an 04 lb7 n nowhere near as loud as mine...so i am very convinced its not normal...the pilot injection is just making it more noticable...gunna prolly throw sum injectors to er soon...boss figures thats whats it...my buddys 7.3 powerjoke isnt even as loud injector wise

make sure you drive another 04.5 or 05 LLY, they are different engines and sound different as well. You cant compare those 2 unfortunately. The LLY'S are louder

well got injectors in it n still noisy (oops but cost 100 bux so i got new injectors :) since i last posted it has started to develop the rough running idle (i think its fuel pressure sensor? please correct me if im wrong i have a buddy with an identical truck same rough running and he had a buddy help him replace something i gather on the cp3 pump (dunno if it was the regulator i dunno but i assume it has the pressure sensor on the rail like the cummins do? all we got fer anything but chrysler is a modis at work and i can see balance rates but not return rates from what i gather return is the identifier for injectors..i can command rail pressure though. just idling it will bring it up to full pressure. what causes the rough running idle again? anyways im runnin outa ideas with the injector noise. a ford diesel guy at work suggested valves outa ajustment but dont these have hydraulic lifters to take up the slack? and im not really excited about diggin into the valve covers again as book time is 10 hours to check em.. any info is apriciated thanks!

The Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) attached to the CP3 can cause a lope/surge at idle (usually no code associated with this).

Duramaxes have solid lifters so valves out of adjustment is a possibility for the noise.

Do a search on "valve adjustment", "fuel pressure regulator", typewriter noise" - lots of reading on these.
