Does it harm the engine if you do not give the diesel any time to warm up prior to driving? We used to always warm up the old gas autos/trucks but now they claim that with modern technology, it is no longer necessary and justy wastes fuel. Is this tru for the modern diesels or sohld a warm up take place? This is my first post so if this is covered elsewhere, many pardons. tks, NG :)

During cold weather it is good to let a diesel warm up some...the oil used is typically heavier than a gasser and the oil pressure is higher from the start. Even after a short warm up (mine currently sits outside at school and last night it was around 15) I still give it ample time before I have fun with it. Also, for future reference, get a signature made(no biggie) but if you have modifications done to your truck it helps us all out on what could be addressed. Even if the truck is stock some general info. is nice.:welcome:

If you use synthetic fluids the warm up time is less. Do you park your truck in the garage, plug it in? My truck sits in the garage. I go out in the morning, start it, back it out and then go back in and pour myself a coffee put on my coat and then leave. 3-5 minutes will make a difference.

I usually let my truck idle for only a few min before driving away, more if it's real cold. Just drive sane untill the temp comes up.

If you have the winter grille cover, that will aid in warming up the motor and the cab.

i'll let mine warm up for no more than a few minutes when it's below 50 and when above i pretty much just wait for oil pressure and go. keep the rpms under... say 1700 if you can help it. until i see some temperature

Its been well below zero lately with day time highs around 5. Mine gets so much idle time that my mileage is horrendous. I dont care though....I dont start anything and drive away at -15.

x3 Just drive like a grandpa and avoid the highway or higher RPM till she gets closer to operating temp. If its cold enough to kick on the high idel I will let her high idle till it kicks off before i take off. If its not then I will still let her warm up for a bit before i take off, how much depending on the temp. If its summer it wont idel much. Long enough to find a CD or something like that.

If I am just driving the empty truck and it is above 32 F I will start it, hook up the seat belt, check the gages and drive easy until the water and tranny temp gets up to run temp. Today it was 10 F. I let it fast idle for a couple minutes than drove. I let it warm up until gages are up to temp when I tow.

What or who told you that moronic statement? I'll bet dollars to donuts it was your order taker{true salesmen don't exist anymore}.The type who know as much about the Dmax as a drunk Paris Hilton on speed.Definitely warm up your engine, more so in colder temps.---the Ally won't even upshift sometimes until it sees some heat to protect it.

I think I read that in Diesel World or in 8 lug magazine.

What about if you are trailering. I at least let the temp get to 190 before towing.

Like a lot of the guys in here, in moderate temps, I will let her idle for a couple minutes, drive her easy, and avoid the highway until up to around operating temp. This has all been said, but I think it's important to affirm it.

Mine hardly ever gets to 190 even while driving. I let it run 10-15 mins in the morning while I feed the dog and get some coffee and it is sitting at about 175 doesnt move the whole way to work.

Well if you did indeed see it there,I,for one would'nt take too much stock in what else they profess. That's just plain wrong info.

I've got a Remote start in my 2004 Lb7 w/2-way remote. I remote start the truck before breakfast in the morning and before I leave for work. I let it for for atleast 10 mins sometimes the whole 20. I NEVER get in and drive without remote starting and letting it run, even in the summer time. Ya gotta get that oil flowing!

Minimum 5 minutes to move the juices and warm it up. (Not that it has been that cold in Az.)
