I have just about completed the deal for a 2004 crew cab duramax. I am just wondering which engine I want it to have? I did not check the vin to see which one it is. I am kind of getting the impression that the gen. 1 might give me injector problems and that the gen. 2 might overheat. I will use the truck to pull my stock trailer with cattle. Usual trailer weight is around 20000 lbs. My question to you guys is which engine do I want to find when I go check the vin?

how often does the thing overheat and how hot does it get?
If it is the lly it will overheat pulling 10k up long steep(6% +) grades in the heat. Mine overheats pulling 7k but the norm seams to be 10k and up.

I guess that is what has me concerned. I pull this trailer with my 97 powerstroke at 65 mph and I don't ever overheat. I don't want to trade and then have problems.

Lots of people tow heavy and don't overheat.

You needs lots of bad stuff together at the same time Heat, Wind resistance, weight, grade, driving style, and some variable in the engines no one seems to be able to pin down etc.

If the truck is otherwise good, the worst can happen you add an extra rad to it for around $1000 or so search for V2 mod.

These LLY's are good engines in a really good truck, and most people really have no problems whatsoever.

I have it pinned down. Pull a load of 10k or better in the heat up a long(not talking the ant hills on the east coast) grade of 6% or better in the summertime and I will promise you an overheat condition.

Read all of the overheating threads and if that doesn't scare you I don't know what will. With that being said, if you don't mind spending an extra grand, the V2 is a work of art and will prevent an overheat condition. If I lose my battle with GM the V2 will be installed on my truck.

Personally, I don't think you will be disappointed in your trade either way. I recently traded my LB7 for the LLY and find the LLY a little more responsive.

My LLY was built june of 05, and I have pulled 15,000 pounds worth of scrap metal, the temp hits around 200 and then never goes past that, I got a good one, I thought the early LLY's were the overheaters, but I dont know that for a fact.

Mine is a june build as well. I'm not so lucky in the towing dept.

For all practical purposes your truck is an LBZ not an LLY. The 06 LLY is nothing like the 04.5 -05 LLY.

Why would yours? It's not a 2004.5 LLY. And what does everyone mean by overheating? I pull a 10 K trailer and the fan comes on at 230 and cools right down. It's never gotten over 230 when pulling the So. Oregon mountains and the Siskious of N. Cal. Or does overheating mean it shuts off and strands one along side the road? Seems some want to pull the mountains without the fan coming on at all. I notice you live in the Midwest and wondering what kind of mountains have you back there?
