What is the proper way to do it? Do you hook jumper cables up to the driver or passenger side or does it matter? Also does it make any difference if you are the jumer or jumpee?

When ever I jump start I just hook it to the battery that is closest to them and let it idle for a minute before trying to start it. It has always worked for me , and at walmart they have sidepost extenders that work great for jump starting with the side post terimals they were only $2.97 for the set.

Drivers side is probably better since it's hooked up to the starter. At least on mine it is. I know on the '96+ have the alternator on the passenger side, so maybe the starter runs off of the opposite side.

Also, it's easier to ground to the frame or block than to try to put it on the side post.

When I read the title I thought I was going to get a chance to tell someone how to get a diesel airborne. Been there done that. :D

And thanks for the info!

I'm pretty sure that the previous reply is mistaken. The starter is on the passengers side, as the oil filter is on the drivers side. Also, the drivers side battery just has a cable that goes across to the other one. I think the passengers side battery is the main one. Maybe I'm confused, not quite sure. I know when my cousin's truck's battery went dead we hooked jumpers up to both batteries off of 2 different trucks to get it going. I've jumped off of either and never had any different results.

If you find the batteries are junk you'll be looking for a "group 78" style with the side posts. If you ask you can get one with the side and top posts. I would put this one on the right side because it makes a home run down to the starter. If you ever need a jump a few years down the road or you need to jump someone else this is much easier to get the cables onto.

Some models have the alternator on the drivers side and some are on the passenger side. All starters are on the passenger side.

When I jump people off I connect to the battery closest to their battery hot cable and the ground cable I hook to my alternator case usually. Never to the battery.

Then I jump them off with my truck off.

I'm always jumping off this nuckle head with a 2005 chevy gasser truck.

Did I mention I have a gasser truck.

A] Faraday's Law says you son't have to jump one first ... just hook 'em up + to + and - to - and you should be OK. Current follows the path of least resistance, and that isn't all that hard.

B] When you are the donor vehicle, you don't have to turn your truck off. This is one of those urban myths, peerpetuated by Chrysler dealers with electronic dash's... the suge used to kill the computer in the speedometer on those ... a $1500 touch.

An easier way to protect your electronics is to leave your truck running (the donor vehicle) while boosting, but with the HEADLIGHTS ON - that will soak up the extra voltage spike when boosting.

high idle works great too when you're doing it alone
Hook up first, then hit the Fast Idle, (less current = less spark).
More current supplied at higher RPM's. Doesn't matter if you're alone or not.
