With the stock pan, system capacity = 12.7 qts.
Stock pan capacity = 7.4 qts.

I think it might be 12.7 for the tranny and converter PLUS 7.4 for the pan.

I quoted my 2002 Helms manual, Maintenance and Lubrication Specs, page 0-39.

Capacities - Approximate Fluid.
5 Spd Auto Allison (M74) - 7.4 quarts
5 Spd Auto Allison (M74) after complete overhaul - 12.7 quarts

For Joe Schmoe draining his tranny through the drain, he will need to put in 7.4 qt. ???? I think that is what he was trying to figure out.

So if all I want to do is drain the tranny so I can install a Mag Tech pan how much fluid is needed? The directions say I need a 20qt pan, but then it says the pan holds 10qts.

Don't forget you need a deep sump filter.
Part #29537966 I believe. But your local Allison dealer will know.

You will add approx 4 quarts to the system.Bottom line is to have plenty on hand and add slowly to
you come up to the correct level on the dip stick.

Following the manufactures fluid check procedure.
