Getting ready to leave today, I usually start the truck and let it run while I load my stuff inside, get the newspaper & trash cans from the driveway, etc. Did all of that, I went back inside and heard the thing take off. I thought someone had jumped in and was driving away at first- scared the crap out of me.
Turns out it was just the high idle, but here's the weird thing: It was cold here for the first time this year, but only about 38* according to the mirror. I thought the high idle was only supposed to kick in under 32*

It dosnt go by the mirror temp. It uses water temp and I believe one of the temps in the intake.....but I'm 99% sure not the temp sensor behind the grill. Seems to work intermittently in that temp range on the mirror becasue I dont think its using that as its sensor.....:think:

It is the water temp and the intake temp. I have had mine kick in at 36 degrees but it was windy.

The mirro temp on my truck is very inaccurate.

Exactly--I have found though that the more you drive it after sitting the more accurate it will get.I've compared the readings to a banks big clock/temp. sign and it will be close.Therefore your elevated idle most likely is coming on at 32 deg.

The mirro temp on my truck is very inaccurate.

Put the winter grille cover on. Mine is off by 5 degrees.

i do that all the time at work, start it and let it run and people always look at it funny! it is odd though i notice somedays it not even cold and it does it and other times it cold and not high idle?

Just depends on the ECT and IAT, if either is too low it will run.

Humidity also plays a role in it too as I've noticed.

I love when mine kicks on! With my exhaust setup it sounds like a 747 on the runway!!:ro)
