i am thinking about going dual. i have always had a thing for the duallys.
If you have a thing for a DRW truck, mileage should not be a issue. For the record, I get between 16.5 - 17.0 HWY empty and between 8.0 - 9.0 hauling my 37' (12,500 lb empty) 5er. Since I live in a rural area, I really don't have a "city" MPG.
The reason for my initial statement of "mileage should not be a issue" is that I see people complain all the time on this and other boards that they are not getting 20+ MPG like so many others claim they get. Many of these people who claim big mileage numbers are driving a 2500 SRW not 3500 DRW. It's as simple as that! You have to pay to play! If you just have to have one of these bad boys, it's going to cost you! Simple as that...
My second comment is that you stated you want to haul horses. How many? What kind of trailer? Will it have sleeping quarters? Are you planning on this being a full time job? Will you be hauling across country? The reason for my questions is that I hauled horses with my 2002 2500HD LB7 just fine. Not cross country, but from point to point. My 2002 also hauled the above referenced 37' 5er just fine. The problem with that configuration was that there was too much side to side rolling motion due to the height and weight of the trailer and that the truck was SRW. To solve the problem I went with a DRW to stabilize the vehicle.
If your concerned about mileage cost,
don't do it. If your going to make a living using your truck to haul horses across the country,
don't do it. Get something like a Kodiak with a air ride system. If you want to 3500 DRW 4X4 because you absolutely want one just because, then :grd: and quit the justification crap!
