Well...there I was changing oil & checking things out up front & when I went to hit one of the zerks (idler arm) with a shot of grease, I heard a small 'pop' and then a long 'squirt'. Sure enough, I busted a boot & grease was oozing like mad! I only gave it 3 pumps with a hand-held gun!

Do I need to replace it or is it ok if I periodically check it?

Yes, you should be ok. I had the same thing happen to my upper ball joint on the passenger side. I just cleaned it off and used some F-4 tape (rubber tape that sticks to itself) as a bandaide until the ball joint went bad so the dealer would replace it. Chances are your idler/pitman arms won't last too long anyway. Mine made it only 27000 miles. I just added the cognito support kit. You should be fine until you are ready to replace it....just make sure you have a little grease in there.
