The flat spot is a possiblity. But my truck had less than 10,000 miles the first time it started to do this. But you are correct there are four places a v8 engine will stop. With the high compression of a diesel I suspect it will stop in a very narrow area. Just like Toyota I am sure the GM enginers know what the problem is and how to fix it. But they will never step up to the plate. I do not see this as an issure that may kill anyone. Thus there will never be a recall.
Less than 10,000 miles is probaly something else. Unless you start and stop every other 5 miles ):h

Hey been awhile since I've been here but I'd like to join the grinding group, I myself just spent 10hrs replacing my flywheel and starter as per my local dealer suggested to solve this problem, only to have the grinding noise come back that same day, talk about frustrating, and it does not matter if you use o.e. parts or aftermarket it still there, and from reading as many forms possible we the group still are suffering with this problem, and yes apparently g.m. could care aless about this problem , they got our money already. sorry guys just really frusted, this has been going on for about a year for me.

What year was your Dmax and how many miles does it have? When did you first have the problem? Milleage when problem started.

My 05' does it every now and again. Always starts right up on the second try. and yes always seems there is a group of people around when it does it. I am going to inspect the starter bolts the next time I change the oil. 145k on her right now

maby it is only a bad starter pignon gear design , maby it a s flexplate desigh or maby it is a misadjusted starter mount .... if i had a second truck that apart maby i can do some test lol !

Not sure if someone has reccomened this but I have this problem on different things over the years and have gotten alot of life out of taking the starter nose cone off and getting into the Bendix and cleaning it up and lubing it. its what slides the gear out to engage the flywheel when you go to start the engine. might help and couldn't hurt.

maby we can open a class action again gm about this problem , the worst it because nobody realy know what is causing the problem exactly.

Now that they are government moters I doubt we would have much luck. My truck has done it from day one. I just ignore it now.

My brother-in-laws (supermax)dads truck did the same (05) and he replaced the starter and flywheel and it still does it.

i come from the stealer , the diesel specialist said that it will not change the flexplate (flywheel) if teeth are not badly damaged, it suspect voltage drop from relay or cable oxidation, it tell maby that can be the ecu that control the starter relay.

i will soon install a direct bypass switch to the starter ! i will keep you informed of my test !

on duramax,

ingition switch tell to ecu power up the starter relay, ecu know when to or not power up the starter relay. i will post the shema.

I dont have any grand in my starter, but occasionally I will hit the ignition and nothing at all will happen. It almost feels like the starter gear is just stuck in place. But, then I try again and it will fire right up on the 2nd or 3rd try.

christg, have you done the direct bypass yet?any change?I am about to try the same thing because of the grinding starter issue.I've replaced my flywheel and starter in the past only to have it grind again.I dropped the starter recently to see what shape the gear was in and it was still in excellent shape. After all the reading etc... i think this must be an electrical problem ,maybe a voltage drop every once in a while causing it not to engage properly.

Is your alternator charging your batteries at all rpms? Mine had to be serviced when my mech. friend checked my system at an oil change with new batteries and sure did catch it this way. Didn't warranty it he just fixed it and I don't have exact circuits or part it was just now. Works at max now and belt is just fine too older belts can start a problem not very often now days though.

I have an 05 LLY that has had the starter problem a few times. I saw somewhere it may be a computer problem. Since then I have always turned on the ingnition and wait for the heater fan motor to start. That is an indication the computer has finsihed booting and is active. That is when I will start the engine. So far it has not done the grinding operation. But I can not be sure yet as it had only done it 6 or 7 times before I started waiting for the computer. I started doing the computer wait about 9 months ago.

When I use my truck as a DD it can happen as often as once per day. At first it was about once per month, then every couple weeks, then every week, and so on.

I could believe that it is an electrical issue, I have had some in the past (bad batteries and now the new ones dont seem to be charging correctly).

The only thing I worry about now is that the flywheel is damaged and in need of replacement.

My 03 does it every month sometimes then every week then back to every month again so I just quit worrying about it.

My truck was doing the same thing, spent $150 on a new starter, same results. Started waiting for the computer to boot up, haven't had a problem in over a year. I have no idea why this works, but it does.
