What are the people in this group doing with the wiring for their gooseneck trailers. I am installing a goosneck ball and brake controller in my 02 2500HD Duramax. It needs to be the 7 pin RV style connector. I am debating on a pigtail that just plugs into the factory 7 pin or hardwiring something in and mounting it in the bed somewhere. Any opinions?

There should be a trailer wiring harness in between the cab and bed. Just drill a hole in the bed and hard wire it to the 7-way plug.

What he said, but I recommend actually running it back or T-ing into the RV connector at the back of the bed and then installing your gooseneck on the front side of the left-rear stake post. It will make reaching it for hitching and unhitching a snap and you won't have to run a wire over your tailgate.

There is a wiring harness zip tied to the bottom of the bed on the driver's side. Get a 7-pin plug and cut a hole in the bed, wire it up and your done. I put mine in front of the D/S wheel well. You have to get in the bed to latch the G/N and hook the chains, just plug it in while your up there. By putting it there I also have plenty of slack in the harness to pull it out to make repairs. my $0.02

follow the harness back...

I am 99% sure of this next comment but it has been a couple of years since i installed mine. If you have the camper wiring, located by the cab, it comes from the back of the truck. I think it was a separat harness tye wrapped to another harness. I cut off the tye wraps and pulled it back to where i wanted the plug (i put it by the rear tailgate closer to the wheel well).

There was no reason to solder on more wires or extend the factory harness.

Good luck

My '99 had it and my '05 has it, but my buddies '05 doesn't. It's if it was optioned with it or not.

Chad; I was talking about the bundle of wires tie wrapped behind the cab, it's a option for heavy duty trailering. All the connections are cut and capped off, all you do is splice them to your plug that you want to install.:)

******* Method= run goosneck hook-up over the tailgate to the plug in the bumper.

Proper Method=Have a plug installed on the inside of the bed (about $30) just in front of the tailgate. Plug gooseneck cable into newly installed plug with NOTHING hanging over the tailgat and down to the bumper.

Then cement block or other junk in back of truck slides and breaks connector . i like the red neck method

If it's mounted the RIGHT WAY on the front side of the rear stake post and you do something hard enough with a gooseneck on that causes enough movement for a concrete block to break it off, you don't belong driving let alone pulling a trailer.

Thanks to all for the input. Ths helped a bunch. I am leaning toward mounting it in front of the drivers side wheel well. Will be in the bed to hook chains anyway. Thanks again.

PS. Snowdrift - You need a pic of your rig on your signature.

I would use a pigtail hooked up to the factory plug in the back. Instead of running it over top of the tailgate though, I'd lift up the tailgate and run it underneath.

I thinking about runing an extension under the truck from the stock 7-pin up through the bed? Seems like I might have a hookup/tie-in somewhere else under the bed. I just haven't spent the time to find it. Anyone know where to look? thanks

This is my first attempt at posting a link, but try this thread. If it doesn't work, maybe someone with more knowledge than I can help out. These connectors are a little more money, but it makes the install super clean and easy.

Hoppy makes a T that plugs in. It cost me about $50 and I ran it into the bed. Both now work with no cut wiring.

Do a search on this subject and you will find some pictures of plug installs. If your truck has the $35 camper option there will be a wire bundle attached to the frame or the bottom of the bed near the cab. It will be about 4' long. I put my plug in the triangle ahead of the fender well.

My truck shows a "YU2" option for camper provision on the build sheet. I guess that's where I would plug in, What? I don't see a harness........

Nevermind, I just found the harness. Bundled up on the driver frame rail behind the cab. Thanks
