I’m starting to research 5th wheels to replace my tt probably after the first of the year, my question is I think I would like to use a gooseneck conversion on the trailer. I don’t know much about this conversion and would like to know if you use the ball in the standard position or does it have to be raised to fifth wheel height and if any of you are using this conversion do you like it?

If you want to convert to a goose-neck and not affect your 5th wheel warranty, I would recommend looking at the Reese Goose Box Gen 2 system. It replaces the factory pin box and will utilize a goose-neck ball in the bed of the truck. The gen 2 has taller wings and give additional height between the trailer and pickup. This hitch has air ride built in that should provide for a smoother experience, see website below;

Lippert, manufacturer of many of the 5th wheel frames, will honor the warranty with the Reese goose box.

This is the approach I will take when I update to a '20 3500 and a new 5th wheel.

Good luck in whatever you decide to use.

Just curious, why convert to a gooseneck rather than using the 5th wheel that comes with the trailer? Conversion seems to cost about the same as a 5th hitch. I would think the 5th hitch is easier to hook up (no safety chains required).

Well my thinking is I can pull equipment trailers or an rv, I won’t have a 5th wheel in my way when I want to haul something and I don’t have to handle a heavy hitch.

Look at te frame structure of a trailer designed as a gooseneck pull, then look at the frame structure of a 5th wheel trailer. That should answer your question. The further from the frame the pull point is, the stronger the structure must be.
