I do both use the system and my own intervals. I've an Amsoil dual remote system and right now with just over 5K on my oil the system indicates 45% left. My oil is still as clean on the dipstick as the day I changed it. I'll use the monitor now w/o reservation bc my oil is so clean. Maybe I'll have an analysis done next change to see what's going on.

Plrod, how does GM view syn oils as opposed to dino oils? Do they say their use is okay but the changing interval is not increased?

Excuse my ignorance but I got my diesel just yesterday and my head hurts from all the information I'm sucking in from fine forums like this one!

Yamahagrizzly,

I also run the Amsoil dual remote system. I'm a dealer, but I'll refer you to one of the forum's advertisers @ www.lubespecialist.com. About $175 for the kit.

Good thread...

A funny story, I owned a 1999 Silverado with a 5.3. I complained to the stealer that the programming was not working properly. It would lengthen the duration the light would come on when I drove the truck hard.
I do mean hard, pulling a 31' TT through the foothills in W. Va. It lengthened the change interval to 8K miles........

They looked at me like I was Nuts!
I tried to tell customer service about it, I got the same reaction from them..... A Box Of Rocks!!!!

I just took my 04 in for its second oil change at 18,000 mi; I got 10,000 out of this last batch. I've been a little uncomfortable with the system, but am getting used to it. My driving is mostly highway miles and the dealer says that is why I am getting so much life out of the oil. With all city driving they say that most people only get 4000-5000 mi from their oil.

I have like 4K on mine and the oil life monitor still says like 55%. I plan on changing it within a month anyway when I change over to the synthetic and probably do the fuel filter as well so it is right before winter.

Did my first oil change at about 2200 miles, went till 11,000 till 2nd one. Oil life still said 11%. However, I have put 12,000 miles on my truck in less than 3 months, gotta love it!

Where do you see oil life % on your truck. I don't see anything untill my truck tells me to change the oil. Do you have to hit something to show what the % of oil life is???

It is located under the dash on the left hand side by the E-brake.

it is very possible that your truck does not have the DIC (driver information center) which is where these guys are getting their information about oil life, if you do, it is in the same location as your odometer/ PRNDL display. My 2001 did not have this and only had the trip odometers and an hour meter which was controlled by a push in stick in the face of the gauges. The DIC is controlled on my truck with a button on the steering wheel. The thing located under the dash on the left hand side is the hood popper if i am not mistaken and you might be able to see whether or not you need to change your oil by looking at the oil on your dipstick, but i bet you you would be better off to go by the recommended mileage in your manual if you don't have the oil life monitor.
