I have a 92 1ton 6.5, new motor last summer. Heres the deal now and getting worse. The glow plugs come on sometimes sometimes they don't. To get them to come on when they will, I have to crank the motor over a couple times. This works most of the time. It also seems that it takes longer than normal for them to shut off. They "seem" like they are on for a good 45 sec to a min. I haven't actually timed it but it is a long time. Another thing a few days ago I was cutting wood and when I would move the pickup I would cycle the key, glow pllugs wouldn't come on, just figured motor was warm enough, strated up then bout 5-10 seconds after it was running glow plugs would come on. Any ideas whats going on?

Did you check for codes?

Sounds like a loose ground or shorted wire somewhere.

The grounds on the intake manifold right side in the back cause glow plug problems. Also the glow controller can have some problems. It's basically a relay. Sits behind the intake manifold on the left side.

Also check all of the glow plug wires for grounding and the connectors.

Your truck has no PCM, won't have any codes as a result of that little quirk.

Check the wire connections top of the glow controller - may be loose after the motor R&R.

Also check the wiring and connector to the glow switch in the t-stat crossover.
