Just an FYI -

I was able to gather up all of the materials to make a glow plug override system equivalent to that sold by some vendors for a dirt cheap $35 CDN. Some vendors are charging well over $130 for the same set up.

I was able to get everything I needed at my local Princess Auto.

If anyone is interested I can give a list of what I bought (item numbers). The install procedure is the same as that written up by Dan on another post....

Here it goes - all Princess Auto item numbers and prices as of 1/17/07...

8094682 - 25 ft of 16 gauge green wire (used to run from switch to ground and from switch to starter solenoid) $2.49

8094781 - 25 ft of 8 gauge red wire (used to run from each side of the starter solenoid to each side of the GP controller) $11.99

8044608 - 12v starter solenoid (used to jump the GP controller which will light up the GPs and the GP light on the dashboard) $6.99

4219358 - metal bat handle switch (I have no problem using a toggle switch as opposed to a momentary switch for the simple reason that I know I will not forget to turn off my glows if I turn them on manually - who could forget with that GP light illuminated in the dash???? Momentary switches can be found at PA as well if you want to go that route) $2.99

4210383 - 10 pack of ring terminals single crimp (used on the 16 gauge wire to connect to the toggle switch and to the starter solenoid) $.99

4210386 - 4 pack of 5/16 ring connectors (used to connect 8 gauge wire to the solenoid and to the GP controller) $.99

8138265 - 30A HD ATO/ATC fuse holder (used to hold a 10A fuse in the line that will run from a switched 12v source in the fusebox to the toggle switch) $2.49

I also must add that you will need 2 self tapping screws to mount the solenoid to either the firewall or one of the fenders (I had these at home so I didn't add them into the cost). As well you will need a 10 amp fuse to insert in the fuse holder (something else I already have tons of).

Don't you just love Princess Auto? They have some wicked sales.
My solenoid came from there as well. Curious if you bought the same one or not? Can you post a pic of it? I was gonna use a furd solenoid then I remembered I had the one from PA.

I will be installing this later today....if anyone is interested I can do another write up to supplement Dan's....mine would be more of an 'el cheapo' method.....let me know if it is worth it to take pics and double my install time....

Please do take pics and explain the install in steps if you can. That and the list of parts you mentioned above would be a huge help for those of us(me) that don't really understand what a solenoid or relay does, just that they are needed for some reason. Princess Auto sure is a good store to live by, for sure.

You asked for it so here it is.....the 'el cheapo' guide to glow plug overriding...

You will need everything mentioned in the 3rd post....you may also require a female spade connector to connect to the power source and to the relay.....

EDIT - Disconnect the batteries before doing anything!!!

The first thing I did was cut 2 pieces of 8 gauge wire.....I cut each piece about 3 feet long....I then crimped on the large ring terminals to each end of the two pieces of wire.....I then attached one wire to each terminal of the solenoid...I also attached my inline fuse holder to a short piece of the 16 gauge wire by soldering it and covering it with liquid electrical tape...

Here is a pic of the progress thus far...

The next step is to open the hood and find a place to mount the solenoid....I chose to locate it next to the baro sensor...

I used an exacto knife to cut out some of the rubberized firewall covering so that the solenoid could be attached right to the firewall....I know....it was an ugly cut.....-20* celsius hardens this stuff up....

I then set my solenoid against the firewall and drilled two mounting holes...

The next step is to go ahead and use some self tapping screws (and washers if necessary) to attach the solenoid to the firewall....

Next, I attached the ends of the 8 gauge wires coming off of the solenoid to either side of the glow plug relay located behind the fuel filter...

Here is a picture of how the 8 gauge wires get hooked up...

I then replaced the 'boots' on top of the GP controller....

The next step is to take off the dash outer bezel....it is removed by taking out the 4 torx screws in the corners....

Next I ran the 16 gauge wire (green) through the firewall to the solenoid....the other end of this wire will come out of the dash and connect to the switch....

I then ran another chunk of 16 gauge wire (the one with the fuse holder) from a terminal on the power source block under the dash just behind the emergency brake on the firewall (inside the truck) to the same place that my other wire ended....

The next step is to take the outer bezel and drill a hole in one of the 'bosses'.....I found the center of one of the bosses and drilled a hole for the switch...

In this pic you will see a hole drilled prior for my hi-idle switch...I duplicated this in the boss in the middle...

Here is a pic of the bezel with the new switch for the GP override installed...

Now all that is left is to go ahead and connect the two 16 gauge wires to the switch in the bezel (remember - one of the wires runs directly to the solenoid and the other wire has a fuse holder on it and it runs to a 12 volt power source in the power block)......

Here is a pic of the bezel installed back in the truck....

Now when the switch is turned 'on' the GPs are turned on and the GP light on the dashboard lights up as an indicator of the system working properly.....

Excellent job Chris! Yes we Canadians love Princess Auto. There is one a stones throw away from where I'm sitting right now. My wife and I were in there the other day to buy some zip ties. $93 later we had bags full of all kinds of neat and wonderful stuff.

Hey Chris with all that extra wire from those 25ft rolls and the extra crimp on ends, all you would have to do is buy a few more solenoids and switches and you could make kits for all of us! :)

Yes I'm always thinking. :D

I could easily make some more kits...but then I would need to become a vendor.....lol...

Ah come on...then we could start our own secret club and have member numbers. We could be the "Chrisk1500 glow plug override kit club". :)

On a serious note. When you install something like you've done, do you then have to use the switch everytime you start the truck or will it still work normally until you throw the switch.?

Truck still runs the glows as per usual....if I need more glow time I just turn the switch 'on' and the glows will light up and the GP light will illuminate on the dash....if the switch is 'off' the ECM just runs the glow plugs on its own....

Stuff Happens this one is easy to prevent, by low cost momentary switch

Same sort of individual who borrows your truck then fills it up with gasoline when truck is clearly maked DIESEL FUEL ONLY my recommendation is put in a monentary and prevent possibility of dead batteries or burnt up glows, also could get snagged to the on position by a jacket sleeve or other some such incumberance on your way out the truck and you aren't looking at the glow on dash indicator .

True......that is why I said right after that, "Momentary switches can be found at PA as well if you want to go that route".....

The toggle switch was personal preference....

Thanks for the awesome pics of the install. I just installed the high idle in my '94 and was going to install the gp override this weekend. I'm going to get all the parts tomorrow. Thanks again.

I TOTALLY agree with TD here. My kids hit my manual GP switch on my ol 6.2 while getting something out of the truck and no one noticed it. Drained the battery and the other reason it blow the GP was I has 12 volt glow plugs installed instead of the 6 volt one that were suppose to be there.
