So I am changing my registration over from California to NY. In the process of doing so I must get NY Insurance and a NYS Inspection. I was told today, by a very reliable source, that when they do the inspection they will do an emissions check. When they do the emissions testing they supposedly, in nuetral I presume, bring the trucks RPMs up to the point that the motor is bouncing off the rev limiter. They do this 3 times:eek: . This gives them a reading of what percentage of something is going on and if it is 40% or below I guess you pass. I dont know but this sounds ludicrous to me. I dont want anyone bouncing my truck off the rev limiter in nuetral or otherwise. It is scary if you ask me. I think when I bring my truck in to be inspected, I am going to move my rev limiter to 2500 rpms with EFI live, that way at least they wont be making my motor scream. Any other NY folks know anything about this. I also heard that it is just Westchester county and that any other county had much more relaxed inspection procedures and such tests will not be performed. Any info is appreciated. Any NYS licensend inspectors on board? It would be great to hear from one if there is one on here.

Jake, they do not to emmissions tests here for diesels. I went through this last year. If you find a back woods mechanic shop they'll never know you dont have a cat....However, you run stacks so it might be kinda hard to weld one up. All they have to do is see it there and you're golden. I was denied by 5 different shops this time last year with my LLY based on the fact that I didnt have a cat and it was supposed to be there. None of them failed me, they just explained that its all computerized now and if they fail you, you go in the state's system as a failure and the reason why. So the next shop plugs in your vin and they'll know you were failed at whatever shop you came from. If you get hassled, feel free to head up this way to get it done. I know its far but I know a guy who does all my work who'll throw a sticker on it for you, assuming everything else is ok.

Just a visual inspection here. Just took the cat off so I don't know how that is going to go over.

They will fail it if its not there.

I found a back woods mom and pop shop that didnt even put it on a lift. Some of these old school shops dont even know that diesels come with cats.

You can try and contact a guy that goes by "Monte" on here.
He owns Precision Diesel here on LI and would be happy to talk to you.

As far as I know they do not run emissions on any diesels in NY in all counties except Westchester. So, if I had an address in any other county I could get around it. But here, in yuppieville Westchester they do run you through emissions. They dont care if youve got a cat or muffler or not, but they do check you emissions. Also, because it is a 1 ton it has to be registered as a commercial vehicle, and you cannot get it inspected at any normal mechanic with an inspection license. You have to take it to a shop that inspects big rigs and the like. PITA.

Anyhow, forgetting ways to get around the inspection methods used here in this county, I was wondering more what people think about holding one of these motors wide open in nuetral, or maybe not wide open, but at the point that it is bouncing off of the rev limiter. It scared me, Im sure they bring it up slow and dont just mash it, but either way it doesnt sound like something Id like to do to my motor. Do you guys think its scary or a bad thing to do to one of these engines?

Put your truck on a dyno a couple of times, it'll get you over that fear real fast.:D

Ive been on the dyno a million times. But, on the dyno a) your not in nuetral and b) I usually still dont bounce off of my rev limiter. I have before, but dont normally.

Hey jake, it is true...ive had my truck inspected 3 years so far like this and they dont bring it up easy, they literally mash it to the floor and hold it against rev limiter for about 15-20 seconds...3 times in a row. It really does suck but if you end up goin to Lisi's in Brewster they dont say anything about being straight piped, or havent so far.

On long Island they emmissons test, they didn't look for cat or anything else just results from sniff test. Programmed and blocker passed with flying colors only comment was man that truck runs clean.

I dunno about other folks' trucks, but when mine hits the limiter, it doesn't "bounce off of it" like a gasser does....it just defuels and rides the limiter.

It sucks, but there's lots of GM service procedures that do it, so I don't think it's necessarily something you should lose sleep over. Take a walk down the street and plug your ears....

Hey Dan, yeah thats pretty much what Nate told me. We went out for a cruise in his truck, then mine, on Saturday night and that is when I learned about this crazy testing. His truck moves right along with his new injectors, pretty cool. He told me that he goes up to Lisi's too. I think Im probably gonna have it done down in White Plains at this big rig towing company. A member on here has a brother, who is also on here, that works there and will supposedly take good care of me and my truck. He has an LB7 in the 12's too. Im going to go see him tomorrow. See ya around.

when I had my truck done in CT , they did the mash the throttle routine.
It took 3 tries for the truck to pass , and its completely stock . I figure the engine management computer got confussed. The tech who checked the truck was more interested in the numbers the computer showed, than if it was chipped etc. He did ask after the 2nd attempt if I had taken the cat off or chipped it, but was more concerned with it passing. The truck is unchipped and no cat stock.
