Im selling edge and so now i wont be able to monitor my boost and egt's :

1) Are all brands the same or is there a better brand than others? I like autometer, those ok?
2) Do I only need pyro and boost or should i also install a 3rd?
3) What 3rd gauge do you recommend?
4) Should I buy mechanical or digital?
5) I am thinking about a pillar mount is it easy to run the cables?

Thanks alot guys :)

Can you please post pics of your gauge mounting locations?

I used AutoMeter's SportComp II for that stock look. Boost and pyro only here. If you are a tower, maybe the 3rd gauge would be diff temp.

Pics of gauges and mount in My Garage.

Still installing between the cold days but I've got auto meter NV gauges. Mechanical Boost, Electric pyro and engine oil temp.

In my 98 gasser I have auto meter ultra lite trans temp and engine oil temp gauges. Have had them for a few years now with no problems.

What you will find in just about every brand with the exception of Isspro is the stepper motor vs non stepper motor. This will be evident by the price increase from one to the other. Most stepper motor gauges also use led's. If you go with a good brand like DiPricol, Isspro, Autometer, Westach etc, quality and reliability will not change, its at night that the led's show their worth, and their superior lighting source. Anyone running DiPricol Optix or any Autometer Led gauge will tell you that you cannot compare an LED to a standard incandescent light. For the Dmax look into the Dipricol Optix series, you will be pleased.

I've been looking for gauges too. I'm looking for gauges that look like the stock cluster. I like the look of the DiPricol black face gauges. Anyone using the Optix gauges? How difficult was the install?

Trotorx2,

The install is easy, especially if you use the DiPricol wiring harness. It just plugs into each gauge and has a seperate dimmer circuit for each gauge so you can set them to match your dash brightness perfectly, and they will dim with the dash as well. If you have any questions just call us we have been selling Dipricol's since 1998!

You might need something longer depending on where you run the tube and wires.

Id run from the existing pyro tap, all the way across the engine, throught the fire wall, up the A-pillar, and into the cubby hole. Id run boost similar except starting at the boost tube.

What if i only run them to my A-pillar?

Sleeper, I thought about an oil temp gauge also. Not to hyjack your thread but tonight I was talking to a buddy of mine that runs a Cummins and he said that he was told to run a rear differental oil temp gauge. He was surprised at how much different the temps were running empty and towing. He said normal temp was around 100 deg and towing his TT it went up to about 180deg. Didn't think that the rear diff ran that hot.

I have not done anything with my 2004 Duramax yet, Only had it since November. In my1975 Scout II I added a Temperature Gauge and mounted a Six Position Switch to it and wired sensors to the Rear Differential, Transfer Case, Transmission Oil Pan and the Transmission Oil Line to the Oil Coolers, The Oil Line to the Engine Oil Cooler and the last sensor in the Thermostat housing. The last was in addition to the factory Temp Gauge. While I was towing I would switch between them and then settle on the highest reading at the time. When the situation changed such as setting in Bumper to Bumper trafic I would check again and when towing aginst a head wind or the mountanis again. Things would always be different in each case. I monitered the Trans Oil going to the coolers as that was alwasy the highest reading and would clue me in as to the next oil change. It was amazing the difference between Cooler Temp and Pan temp. By using the same gauge you eliminated one variable between readings due to manufacturing tolerances on the gauge. I will be doing the same on the Duramax as a minimum. I will be towing the same SeaRay 245 Sundancer (8500 Lb) as I towed with the Scout. I know it was to big for the truck, But as things Broke I beefed them up and never had a problem. Of course it was not the original 1975 IHC Sold me, The 304 had been replaced with a 392 the Trans was a beefed 727 TorqueFlight both drive shafts had been beefed the radiator was custom. I do not expect to have to do the same for the Diesel.
