Anybody on here familiar with titling a gas to diesel conversion in Utah?

I have an 88 square body that came with a TBI 350, and have been collecting parts for a 6.2 swap for awhile. It's on vintage plates, which didn't used to require emissions testing in Utah.

They just passed a new law (SB 51) which requires emissions testing even for vintage plated vehicles model 1981 and newer. Diesels up to 1996 are still exempt. Since the truck is titled as gas I will have to get it emissions tested this year.

If I swap in a diesel motor which was a factory option for the chassis (6.2), does anyone have experience getting such a vehicle retitled in Utah? I'll be calling the DMV this week, but the info you get largely depends which agent picks up the phone so I figured I'd see if anyone here has prior experience so I can have some idea what to expect.

Thanks!

So I called the DMV this morning, and they said if it's an EPA approved engine/chassis combination (which a 6.2 and C30 obviously is), just bring it to the highway patrol for a safety inspection after the swap and then bring the truck + safety inspection certificate to the DMV and they'll issue a diesel title. Seems pretty painless.

I'd still love to hear from anyone who has successfully done this in Utah though. I'm probably 6 months away from being ready, but I'll post back when I get everything finished.

I registered my 77 in Vermont even tho i fon’t live there which is legal. When i did so i changed it from gas to diesel. Now if i go to title it in any state it will be as a diesel. I have no experience with a utah reg but there are always ways to work around most of these things unless you live in CA … then your SOL

so yeah just another option but they sound pretty normal in Utah if its that easy.

what kind of inspection did you need to do when you got the Vermont title to change from gas -> diesel? Or did you just tell them it was a diesel and that was it!?

I filled out the fotm and fid it all by mail. Sent in the form and cheque and in a month i got plates and a registration card. You can google “Vermont loophole” its a common way to get around vehicles not having a title or in my case new lift laws that made it impossible to get my truck inspected in my home state. Another way is the Montana LLC route….

again if utah will let you change it that would be the easiest / cheapest..
