Gas mixed with Diesel - How would you know?

Just a random thought as I was driving into work this morning.

My brother-in-law borrowed the truck last weekend and topped off the tank when he returned it. He said it took 16 gallons.

I assume he put in diesel, but it made me wonder. If your tank was filled with 75% diesel / 25% gasoline mix, what would the truck run like?

The truck runs and sounds fine, but I was just wondering if you would notice a difference or not.

Oh, you would notice a difference alright, I remember doing that decades ago to a tractor we had, what a rattle box it was, immediately! So if rattle just fine, then obviously he did the right thing.

the truck would do things that would make you cry. probably like blow up the engine with the stock compression ratio. i wouldn't be willing to test it out either. does he have a receipt from the fuel station?

Nah,

it doesn't blow up. I couldn't tell any difference in running it the 20 miles or so home.

I did that very thing back about 8 or10 years ago in my 94 Suburban. I put about 15 gallons of gas in it until I woke up and realized that it was gas.

I went and got 4 qts of oil and put that in with the rest of the (25gal) diesel. (the 42 gallon tank was almost empty)

I then drove it all the way home. (about 20 miles) I still didn't like it so I drained it all out into 5 gallon containers..... the 15 gallons of gasoline + 25 gallons of diesel + 4 qt of 30wt oil..... I then got another 6 qts of 10w non-detergent oil and dumped it in and ran all 40+ gallons in my VW diesel. It ran fine. (the VW owners manual actually allowed gasoline as an emergency fuel!!)

It's not really a problem for the engine itself. Diesel fuel lubricates the pump. with gasoline, you could wear out the pump quicker but it probably still wouldn't hurt the injectors. Because you may not get as much injection pressure with the lower viscosity fuel (gas+diesel) it's possible that it would have the effect of retarding the timing slightly because of the lower pressure. (the injector would "pop" a little later during the injection event) With pure gasoline you may not produce enough pressure to even "pop" the injector but since it's been done so many time with little ill effects I don't think this is true either.

It's very possible that the "gas event" had something to do with my replacing the injection pump back some 10 years ago.....but maybe not......I was having all the symptoms before the "gas event"..........and just about EVERY DS injection pump was replaced in every 94/95 6.5L engine many years ago too.

I would say that if someone puts gas in your 6.5, if it's less than about 25% I'd just put a bunch of oil in it and run it.

if it's more than 25% put a bunch of oil in it to get home and drain it, dilute it some more (with oil) and then run it.

Cheers,

By the way, if you want to know if there's gas in your diesel,

drain some into into an open container. (do this out in the open)

Use a long match stick and place the lighted match near the surface of the fuel.

slowly lower the lighted match into the fuel.

If it lights there may be gasoline in the fuel...

If the flame is extinguished by the fuel, there's probably not enough in there to be a problem.

I had an acura siphon fuel out of my old 95's tank when I was at a party, came out and all I hear is this little gasser bouncing up and down on idle, I didn't think anything of it till I got in and my fuel gauge was a quarter lower. As I drove by the car, I then clued in.

Rolled down my window and smiled as I told him, he should make sure he steals the right fuel when he does it with his next car.

Then as I left, the car died and wouldn't start again... Some people.

As far as how would you know there is gasoline in a diesel?
You'll know just by hearing.

lol. one reason i got a locking fuel cap. the other is in case anyone decided to fill 'er up w/ premium at a full service station. i tell them let me fill my own tank or i'll go somewhere else. they always let me fill my tank. :D

Never assume the gas attendant know's you need diesel fuel :D
I reemed a guy out for grabbing the gas nozzle... Told him I'll go else where and pump my own fuel, his manager didn't look to happy, could have fried an egg on that red face.
I plan on buying a locking door or cap... It was still worth loosing 30$ worth of fuel to know some lowlife who was tryin to save a few bucks, just cost himself a whole wack in the end ;)

If you DO have gas in your diesel, shut er down, leave it alone, get a fuel system flush, change fuel filter(s) and hope to hell you didn't do any damage. I remember a guy that came in with a Jetta (on a flatbed) that the attendant filled up with gas, thankfully the guy noticed, and called the shop I worked for right away. He requested we sent him a copy of the bill, and sent the actual bill to the gas station. He was lucky though, he didn't have it running. Dropped the fuel tank, cleaned it out, replaced the filters and he was out of there happier then a pig in sh*t.

Maybe it's me, but I'm freaken amazed that how many attendants don't realize what kind of fuel it takes. Listen to it dude, do you think a gasser sounds like this? Although I did get a couple of "ah, sir, what's wrong with your truck" and "oh yeah, sounds like we're gonna see you blowing a rod any second now..."

I know of a guy who runs 80% filtered WVO and 20% gas in his 6.5. he just mixes it and pours it in his tank with no mods to the truck. The gas thins down the oil and off he goes. Says he's been doing this for years.

gas vs. diesel

If there's too much gas it won't even run. I don't know if it's because of the different energy difference in diesel vs gas or what. I know it won't run b/c my mom ran my dad's truck dry when I was about 12 and she filled it to the top with gas and it just kinda rattled a little, but wouldn't get organized enough to run. Looking back I'm thankful the engine was hot and the glow plugs didn't light. I'd hateto see the carnage of gasoline injected into a cylinder with red hot glowing plugs on a 6.2. I think anyone who's driven a diesel has a story. If it'll still run, pour a couple of quarts of oil in the tank and let 'er rip like the others said.

Ha, my wife did that one time in our '98 after driving the truck for years. She called me and said it wasn't running right but didn't know why. I went and picked it up and got it to drive home. It ran like crap. After trying to bleed the system I noticed an odd smell! Basically she put about ten gallons of gas into five or so of diesel. I ended up draing it all out, put a new fuel filter in, bleed the system and drove it. No problems since and that was years ago.........

lol i have to think a lil gas in the diesel is not a bad thing. back when i was lil my dad had a vw rabbit that was a diesel and it actually had a lil tank oh like a quart or so that you put gas in and then you turned a valve and it would dump in the diesel tank and it was said to keep the diesel from gellin up.. and that was all from the factory

The tire shop in town also has a gas station in another town. One day in there the phone rings and a guy who just bought a brand new diesel dodge pumped 50gal of 107 octane racing fuel in it. He didnt start it but wanted to know if he could. What was really bad is the racing fuel was like $4 a gallon.

I just had a similar incident. I have a 93 chevy with the 6.5 turbo. Stopped to fill up with fuel after a long day and put 20 gallons of gas instead of diesel. Didn't realize my mistake, and drove home around 15 miles. I had just swapped out the engine for one from the junkyard and hadn't been driving the truck prior to the swap, but the new(used) engine ran great, had good oil pressure etc. I was adding Lucas injector cleaner at every fill because the used engine had sat for a while. This was the second fill. I didn't notice any performance difference on the way home until the end of my driveway when I notice the idle was very low and lights flickered because of that. Granted I'm hard of hearing and a person with better hearing might have noticed the problem sooner.

Long story short: pumped out the tank, added fresh diesel along with Lucas injector cleaner, and it still runs fine. Oil pressure is still good, no metal filings in the oil, etc. I sweat bullets at first and then ran into this site that gave me some hope that I hadn't torched the engine. Fortunately, no apparent harm. Possibly for two reasons, Lucas injector cleaner is mostly oil, I had added 6 ounces on the first fill and added 6 ounces on this fill, so there should have been a little over a pint in the tank which would have helped protect the pump and injectors. Also diesel separates from gas and is heavier so since there was 14 gallons or so of diesel in the tank it's possible that not that much gas went through the pump and injectors. Regardless it seems to have survived my brain fart.

It is not correct to say that gas/petrol separates from diesel....and the implication of burning any serious percentage mix of gas/diesel should not be underestimated.

In the past, in some geographies, a mix of up to say 10% gas in diesel has been suggested for preventing gelling/waxing of diesel in cold climate....this was considered possible due to the very acceptable mixing and engine technologies of the day.

However, a seriously heavier dose of gas will endanger your engine, if it mixes down to the pick-up in a significantly high enough percentage.

The longer it is left in the tank and the greater the percentage of volume the greater the chance of damage. This is actually exacerbated by the depth of mixing (not separation) that can occur with time.

Don't be misled by the notion you can simply skim it off the top or successfully dilute it..... purge the whole tank and thank yourself lucky if you haven't damaged the engine in the meantime........:2cents:

I have put 7 gallons and 10 gallons in my Duramax accidentally and just dumped a quart of motor oil in and topped it off with diesel and drove it. It has 240,000 miles on it and still runs like new. I also had an gas attendant put 22 gallons in it and we had to push it to a service station a block away and he pumped out the tank and we filled her up with fuel and off I went! The owner of the gas station gave me the tank of fuel and a 100.00 gift card. It took 6 of us to push the truck! I never started it during the whole process.
