Ok, here's a wierd one.

I was pulling out of town with no load on. It was about -20C.
I came around a corner and went over a little bump. (more of a gentle bounce, not a jarring kind of bump) I don't think the bump is even relevant but I mention it because that's when "it" started.
All of a sudden my CEL came on, and the engine started knocking. I also noticed black smoke in the mirror.
I pulled over and shut it off immediately. I started it again hoping it would just reset itself. It was still knocking.
I suspected it was a fuel knock, but it was so nasty I actually pulled the stick half expecting to see metal. Thinking I spun a main or something. The temp was fine though, and there was no metal. Back to the fuel knock theory.
I started it two more times and it suddenly ran fine. I continued on my way watching my guages the whole time. (700km trip) The CEL stayed on.
The next day the CEL stayed on the first time I drove it, but the second time it went out.
It hasn't come on since, and The fuel knock hasn't come back either.
I've put on about 10000 kms now and not a hint of trouble.
I haven't been able to check for codes so I don't know what the CEL was for.

Any thoughts?

Pretty difficult to say if you do not have the code. If it happens again, get the code read and then maybe we can be more helpful.

It wasn't a 1093. That's more of a miss/hesitation kind of a thing. I've heard that before.
This was an all out knock.
It revved past 2000 so no limp mode, and it shook like a bastard while making an ungodly knocking noise.

Did you fill recently when the knock happened? Maybe pulled some nasty $hit from the tank?

Check out the MAT, MAF, and Airflow sensors, that might be a source of your problem.

yes, but I'm thinking that's unlikely, I just put in a new Fleetguard fuel filter, and they're the only fuel in town. I've filled up several times from them since and no trouble, also, no other trouble reported around town. (small community)

K, but I've done 10,000 kms since, I haven't had the same problem again.
I've also seen much colder temps, like in the -35C range.

Good call chloeourdog.

Last Sunday I was heading out of town again and 2 1/2 hrs into the trip it happened again. I managed to limp it to the next town took it to the stealer the next morning.
Codes: p0202 p2149 p0208 p0299
replaced some injector connectors (#2, #5, and #7) and she's kickin powerstroke a$$ again.

It sure didn't take too much wiggling on the connector to make it rattle and knock. What makes those connectors fail? moisture/corrosion? engine vibration?
