This is all about my 97.

1. The actuator on the diff itself. What does this actually engage? Some sort of posi lock or what? From what I have read the front is just an open rear?

2. The transfer case actuator. Is that for HI/LO?

3. I read somewhere that if I install a switched relay on the front actuator, I could in turn have a 2LO. IS that true?

4. I just replaced the front diff actuator with an OEM style from JC Whitney, the thermal style. As far as I can tell the only advantage to upgrading to the newer style is faster 4x4 engagement and durability, correct?

5. Is the transfer case actuator a thermal as well or some completely different design?

Thx for the help. I'm in a learning kinda mood today.

The Actuator is Thermal

When the oil heats up enough it extends. Which in winter can take awhile. The system sucks. We have had nothing but problems with it. So got rid of the actuator, and put in mechanical actuator. Now I know if it is in 4x4. The set up was 160$.(from Posi Lock) The replacement actuator is 70$. So we just went mechanical.

The actuator moves a toothed wheel that connects the inner and outer halves of the right side axle together.

Do you have trans case shifter or push button?
