Hey there, just used my last suspect for my hard starting problem. Now looking for other idea.

Thanks for your help

1. Describe the problem you are having in detail: When the engine has been sitting for a couple of hours (4+) It will take a lot of cranking to start(7-10seconds approximately), it will not start without a light touch on the gas pedal. Once started, it will release a large cloud of grayish whitish smoke (smelling unburnt diesel, no coolant smell or loss). The time is longer has the outside temperature drops.

2. Year of truck/engine. 1996 TD diesel no EGR with factory installed draft/road tube.
3. Odometer reading (indicate miles or kilometers). 140 000km or ±90000miles
4. Indicate the model number on the Injection pump (starts DS4 or DB2......). DS4
5. Indicate if you know if it’s a 1500, 2500, 2500HD, 3500, 3500HD. Motorhome
6. Do you have an EGR on the engine? (An F or an S engine code 8th VIN digit) No EGR
7. Air Filter condition (visual check). New
8. Fuel filter condition (freshly changed, mileage since changed). New
9. Location of PMD/FSD? (ex. on pump/remote over intake, behind bumper). Front bumper not touched by water
9a. If remote mounted, describe wiring harness (homemade or purchased from which vendor). Leroy harness
9b. Indicate the location and condition of the FSD/IP grounding wire. On the pump.
10. Outside Temperature (C or F). _ ° 30c, 86f

11. Service Engine Light while running?- on/off/intermittent Sometimes P0238 and P0236
11a. Service Engine light does glow during start/cranking/bulb check: Yes/No Yes
12.Have you scanned for engine codes? Yes/No Yes
12a. List exact results on engine codes. None present at the moment, will something get P0236 and P0238 on long drive especially if stopping for a brake.

13. Condition of Battery terminals (removed, cleaned and tightened). Done today, no change.
14. Known condition and age of Batteries. 2 good batteries with 2 supplemental house battery.
14a. Are batteries a matched set of same age? yes 2 years old.
15. Condition of Major Grounds (removed, cleaned and tightened) All cleaned and tightened today.
15a Have the batteries been individually load tested? No, craking speed seems more then adequate.

16. Does engine crank, or "turn over"? Yes
16a. Does engine start and run? Yes but it take too long
17. If engine does not start- Crack injector line: do you have fuel? Yes/No
18. Does your Wait To Start light come on? yes
18a.Number of seconds WTS light is lit. WTS light is cycling for about 30-40seconds
19. Engine Cranking speed (if you have an accurate tachometer). No accurate tachometer.

20. Are you experiencing Stalling? No
20a. Describe the event (upon startup only, down the road, hit a bump, etc...) first start of the day or long time between start.
20b. Do you notice loss of dash or instruments? no
21. Check turbo inlet and air filter for obstructions. No obstructions
22. In a no-hot start, pour a bottle of room-temp water on the injection pump. Does it start now?
23. Lift pump test - Describe results. : 5 PSI while WTS and while idling on water drain (front of the engine small brass valve)

24. Upon cold start, does the radiator hose get hard quickly? Yes/No did not check, no loss of coolant
25. Upon cold start, do you have excessive white smoke? Yes/No yes
26. Do you have excessive cranking time before the engine starts? Yes/No yes
27. Have you used the block heater? Does it affect engine starting? (only try for starting problems).not tried
28. Are all glow plugs in proper working order? 7 new glow plug one broken in the block but not leaking.

29. During hard acceleration, do you have excessive black smoke? Yes/No no
30. Do you have any unusual exhaust smoke issues? no
31. Turbo check out - Pass/Fail pass recently rebuilt with Wicked wheel
32. Indicate fuel that you are using: Bio-Diesel, #2 Diesel, SVO/WVO, other Normal diesel with ATF or marine two stroke 200:1
32a. If running Veggie Oil fuel setup, indicate details of your conversion (homemade or packaged system).
33. Are you using any fuel additives? If so, please list. ATF or marine two strokes 200:1
34. Upon unscrewing fuel cap, do you have a large vacuum formed in the tank? Yes/No no
35. Do you have any service history available that might pertain to the problem you are having? New glow plug controller, new starte, new Bosch glow plug
36. Please indicate any modifications to the vehicle that might help us diagnose better. Turbo stick. Also connected a second feedwire from battery to glow plug controller.

May be not the problem with your truck.
NO ATF as fuel additive, please.
It is an old myth and modern ATF has not been designed to burn completely.
Modern ATF has been redesigned to last a long time, now.

2 cycle oil is good at a rate of 1:256.
Or any diesel additive.

With the grey smoke. It looks to me you either have a problem with the glow plug system. Or bad injectors leaking down overnite.
What brand of injectors are in Your truck?
