I have no experience with those yet. I hear good things about them. I was looking a Powertrax or an Aussie locker for the rear of my CJ7. I would avoid loc-rite as they tend to have problems and the cust service is terrible.

Any of you guys have any experience with this kit? I'm considering using for a Jeep CJ7 application. Light off-road use no big places to play here.

A buddy of mine has one in a S-10 and it performs well. The tires are stock so I don't know how it would hold up to larger ones. He has proably had it on for 50k miles and not a problem yet. It stays locked and only unlocks when going through a turn (one spinning faster than the other).

I just installed one in my buddys S-10 Blazer with a V-8. It's taking a pounding and still holding up. Locks in an instant.

Dude, whendya getta Jeep?

Um when I sent the Olds (winter beater) to the graveyard after extensive beatings and it was ready to throw a wrist pin. :D

Details,

1983 Jeep CJ with a 87 rear clip. Frame clean and body.Slight rust on fender seams ,nothing bad and window frame, what else is new.Interior is Rhino lined or sum-tin.

Fresh 258 with a Weber and DUI dist and a mild cam. Borla Header and soon to be gone cat back system.
T4 with rebuilt rears with 4-11's. Amc 20 rear open and a dana 30 up front Fresh Center Force Clutch.

No rocket but who wants to fly around in these things.

Superlift 2.5 in lift with 2 and a quarter drop shackles out back . Reverse shackles front with 1 and a half drop. Running Super Swamper 33 10.5's loud obnoxious and ruff! Gotta go in the spring!

Have been doing a few things to it,big list from steering shaft, tranny mount,sway-bar bushings, to wiper rebuild to blah blah blah.... :D

All and all cool winter chrasher, for now,for what I gave for it. Had it I dunno better than a month bought in NJ and trailered back with the Dually.

Could have sold it three times since I've had it. Have been spending quite a bit of wrenching time on it.

Gonna install the locker kit most likely Saturday. ;)

Buddy might have a hook up on a 327,that would be VERY interesting and something I'm interested in doing!

Dually is real dusty and lonely. Sad aint it

First off pitch that amc-20, find yourself a dana-44. It is much stronger and has one peice axle's. The only locking diff that i will run is the detroit locker, it is bullet proof. The lock-right has problems with larger tires, the teeth tend to round off so it doesnt lock properly and the unit is only as strong as the cross pin and carrier. Under some good abuse they WILL BREAK.

Understand your point but I'm not building a hard core off-roader as there is really no place in my area to venture to unless I build a trailer queen to take places. I don't desire a full time locker street manners would be less than desirable IMO.

Basically looking for better traction for light off-road and wet winter traction.

A rear swap (know the AMC 20 is weak) isn't out of the question but first gotta find one and a swap wouldn't be done until the summer months. So looking for something,I do believe this will work, in the mean time.

Thanks

As long as you don't put 37's on and wedge the rear tire between a rock and a hard place, the 20 will do fine. The powertrax is a great street/off road locker. If your going to drive in the snow the detroit would have you sliding all over the place. The powertrax (no slip) will unlock in "loose" situations. The detroit is a great hardcore locker but thats not what he wants.

AMC 20 isn't all weak. The 2 piece axles do suck, so as long as you're pulling the shafts out to do the locker it's a good time to do 1 piece axles and the kits come with seals, bearings, etc. The center section of the 20 is marginally stronger than a dana 44 and is actually the same ring and pinion and carrier that is used in the H1. The tubes are known to bend under heavy use, although I had a few feet of air under my CJ last week and didn't bend them so I guess you really have to hammer on them. Definitely do the engine swap. I swapped out my 258 and T5 for Chevy power a couple of winters ago and it makes it so much better. Nothing like trying to keep up with the steering wheel on a mud tire'd v8 Jeep on a wet road.

Took a little longer than expected 4.5 hours but I can't complain!

Had to pull the complete chuck as because the 411 ring was wider than stock ring making the pin unable to slide out,so I had to remove the ring gear. Although it made for easier assembly of the kit on the bench, kit is pretty straight forward.

Found out that it already has one piece axles, cool! Previous owner must have upgraded when the 411 and refresh rear and front axles were done.

I'll let you know if I break it,something I'm good at :D

You should have good luck with it. A friend of mine has one in his 86 3/4 ton chevy with close to 350 hp on 38's and hasn't broke it yet.
