It's really the EPA's design which was patented. The EPA worked with Ford to develop an SUV with some nice fuel economy #'s.

They projected Ford's large SUV (Expedition) with a:
1) 3.8L diesel would get 32mpg city and 22 hwy,
2) 1.9L diesel would get 33mpg city and 23 hwy.
