EGR Delete Question

I finally have my Tahoe on the road! It was smoking pretty bad and I couldn't figure out why. I took it into a diesel shop that I like and they said the EGR was bad and stuffed a large BB into it effectively blocking it off. Now the truck runs great but I have the "Service engine soon" light on because of EGR codes P0400 EGR flow and P0401 EGR flow insufficient detected.

Here are my questions: Is this an okay fix and if not then what is a better one? Should I replace the EGR?

If this is an okay fix, how do I get the "service engine soon" light to go out?

Sometimes we succeed in cheating the computer by keeping the EGR valve connected to the system.
The EGR port itself being blocked. This way, the ECM "thinks" it's still running with EGR in the system. Sometimes plugging the vac line is enough.

Best for OBD2 truck is to have a reflash including EGR delete (and MAF delete too).

Read somewhere that the PCM in a obdII truck will cycle the egr and look for a increase in MAP so they can't truly be fooled. Mine threw codes as well when I blocked mine but the re flash took care of that.

Ok you have a 98 you should have a maf air flow meter. The ecm is looking for a change in air flow. Your only option is an ecm flash or a light. I am not sure how it runs with that code. Some codes just turn on the light but some when set they change something else. Like for my 95 if I get a 78 waist gate code. The ecm cuts fuel. But say a code for the glow plugs if you get it fired up it will run just the same.

in my 98 i had the same code. ended up changing vacuum pump, all vacuum lines, baro sensor and checking everything else. got annoyed with throwing money at it and got a ecm flash and I blocked off the EGR. runs perfectly now with no service engine soon light.

glad to see another tahoe out there

Mine threw the same code when I blocked it off. In a 97 anyways it will just turn the ses light on, not effect drive-ability in my experience.

if anything make for a happier engine as its not ingesting all that soot from the exhaust

When I opened it up to put the frost plug in I couldn't believe the amount of build up. I have been running for about 10 months yet with no egr and am loving it. I still think that the heads will be a mess but here's to hoping the soon to come WMI will make it squeaky clean internally as some have reported.

I bought a 1994 6.5 with efi, I assume it has EGR?

96 model year...
Before the Intake Swap and reflash, I replaced the EGR Sensor and then plugged the line. No light.
