I had boughten a 1997 GMC Sierra K1500 with a 6.5 Turbo Diesel. I had completely removed the egr valve and changed the center head to be a delete but still bringing up the code. Do I have to change the ECU if so could I just flash it myself instead?

Welcome

The ECM will need a tune programmed into it. to remove the code.
If you have the programming equipment you could do it yourself.
Otherwise, you'll need to send the ECM into a vendor like Kennedy Diesel to get it programmed

I know mechanical work not computer work and the truck shouldn't had the egr that was on it from the beginning.
Those were Standard installs from the factory on the 1500 series trucks

^^Yup EPA regulations. The only way to delete the EGR on OBD2 trucks it to have it programed out of the PCM. Cant really do it yourself without software that costs thousand$$$ to buy. There are no over the counter programers available for the old style PCMs in 6.5. Best option is to send your PCM out for a tune deleting EGR. Or you can buy one with a custom tune.
I upgraded the PCM in my 98 1/2 ton with a custom performance tune minus EGR. It did not cost that much and is well worth the money I spent on it.

if your problem is delete the EGR from an ECM for "S" engine..and you don't need other mods

you can reflesh your ECM with an F engine program compatible with your ECM

unplug the 2 EGR solenoid, retain the turbo solenoid only and baro sensor

and you got an "F" engine without EGR

you can also find something in a salvage yard... I think it costs much less than a refresh if don't reflesh by yourself
