What is the difference in the drivetrain of a 06 2500HD D/A versus a 2500HD 6.0 gas. I have heard that the D/A 2500HD is the same as a 3500HD with the exception of one less leaf spring. The reason I ask is that on a RV forum you always get someone telling people that you can’t tow that much weight with the D/A because you will be over the D/A GVWR and that you would be better off with a regular cab 2wd 6.0 2500HD. I would think that with a good set of over loads that the 2500HD D/A would handle a lot more than its recommended GVWR by chev and still be legal and safe by state standards. Are the brakes, springs, differentials all the same on all 2500HD’s ?

On the earlier trucks for sure, to get the AAM rear axle you had to order the Dmax or the 8.1. The sick.0 got a MUCH smaller rear end as well as a slushbox auto instead of the Allison. There are always way too many "weight police" on the RV forums that actually believe you can and should tow 8K behind half ton's but think the mighty Dmax is overloaded by a 2k pin weight. They need to get a clue.

The rear differential on a 6.0L 2500HD is smaller than on the 8.1L or 6.6L DM 2500HD. I think the rear springs and the brakes are the same. The transmission on the 6.0L is the 4L80E 4-sped auto and on the 8.1L and DM it's the 6-spd Allison on 2006+.

the typical 6.0 rear for the 3/4 ton will be about the same as the 9.5" corp 14 bolt. the diesel 3/4 ton and 1 tons should have the AAM version of the 10.5" 14 bolt (which is damn near bulletproof).

the 9.5" will tow just fine. it's a smaller ring gear and not a full floater, but neither of those are a concern for tow rigs (just when wheelin)

brakes and springs I'm not sure about

Negative... The 6.0 2500 HD gets the AAM 10.5" full-floater (easily identified by the removable pinion section), while the DMax and 8.1 get the AAM 11.5" FF. All 3500's get the AAM 11.5" rear AND all 3500's have larger tubes on the rear axle. Cheers.
