Noticed grease leaking out of the drivers side star shaped flange, where it bolts to the flange of the differential. Is this an axle seal leaking? Cv's look ok. How much to replace and how hard?

is it running down the side of the flange closest to the diff (inner side of flange) if so then the axle seal or the vent tubeplug. plastic (black or light cream in color) just above and forward of the axle flange could be loose. grab it by the *** in the cneter where the tube connects and give it a wiggle to see if the plug moves. if it doesn't move then it probably isn't leaking.
to access the axle seal
1- remove skid plate
2- remove six bolts in star shaped flange. 15mm
3- split cv flange away from axle flange
tap side of cv boot lightly with hammer if the flanges don't seperate
on their on and pull/pry the flange straight down so that the cv flange
slips past axle flange.
4- smack the axle flange on inside face with a hammer. may take more
than one hit. If the flange doesn't pop out after the first 3-4 hits it
may require front diff removal. 01's are normally pretty good in this
regard.
5- pry out old seal
6- reverse procedure.
approx time frame 1/2 to 1 hour
hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, yeah it looks like it is being thrown out between the two flanges...I guess I'll have to spend one of my days off gettin it done, doesn't sound too bad.
