i have been wanting to bypass my glow plug inhibit switch altogether because i am having hot-start problems (fires right on up when cold at any temp) and i think it would start better if the glow plugs would cycle.
so i could bypass this switch that prevents them from cycling when hot, but then i am concerned that it could cause damage. They must have put it there for a reason.
But if i knew not all 6.5's had one then i would not have to worry about it as i could know for sure it is really not needed.
Can anyone clear this up?
thanks,
Paul

There is no switch that keeps them from cycling.

The glow plugs are normally controlled by the computer. Not sure how yours are setup. What year is the motor?

Use a manual override if you want to. What kind of glow plugs do you have?

Yes, you do have a glow inhibit switch, but that's likely not the problem - the early DB2-4911's were shipped with excessive rotor-head clearances, resulting in warm\hot-start problems.

What are your local ambients?

Check the Stanadyne label for color - black or blue - look for a green tag on one of the top cover screws, and post the DB2-xxx-xxxx number.

Unless you have G60 glows, you'll fry the plugs with extended glow, so check out the Inj Pump first, then the brand and series of gp.

thanks for the replies.
this IP was rebuilt this past summer and the person who rebuilt it said he does not think it was a 4911 - i asked him about this and he rebuilds these things all the time so probably knows something about that issue. I have not ruled out that it could be a pump issue but i am trying some other things first before i pull the pump.
And i do have good glow plugs, supposedly they are better than 60g's with dual self-regulating coils, i forget what they are actually called.

So would it cause any damage to cycle the plugs while the engine is hot? that would at least help trouble shoot.

thanks,
Paul

Should be a data plate on the IP with it's ident info on it, you may need an inspection mirror to view it since this is in a van and a little tougher to scope out things,

no problem to glow while hot, I'm not sure on 87 vintage but your glow control should keep you out of trouble from too much glow time.

What you don't want to do is extended glow and not knowing what style plugs are in it, you may want to pull one of the easy to get at ones, and get an idea what you have, assuming the last time they were changed, they were changed as a set.
