Im about to buy an 01 ext cab duramax and I see everyone usually lists they have an allison transmission behind them. Is this an option or standard for every auto diesel?

I don't think he will change his mind. I (along with many fellow 01 owners) love my truck. I certainly wouldn't trade it for an 03+ that I have to add a cabin filter and footwell lights. I wouldn't trade it for an LLY and risk getting an overheater. Since he is shopping used, price must be a factor so that ruled out the LBZ. I say run the VIN in the VIN check section to check the history and don't worry about it being an 01.

If I were you I would do some reading on here about the 01's before you drop coin, I think you will change your mind.

well ive been reading for a few days and havent found the bad things on 01's so please enlighten me.

Please give some input on the 2001 2500HD im looking at buying from a good friend of mine. He bought a new 06 dually duramax and I can get his for $14,000.

It has 4" exhaust and cold air intake, 285's on stock wheels, 4x4 extended cab shortbed, ...seems like a good deal since it books for $18750 private party. It has a Transfer Flow toolbox tank that holds 30 gallons. A Gooseneck hitch is installed, fifth wheel hitch rails are installed, and a 10,000 lb hitch on the back of the truck.

Additionally got a brand new motor 25k miles ago from the dealer. Apparently the injectors failed and filled the crankcase with fuel while pulling a steep grade with a 5th wheel behind it...all the fuel in the oil caused it to eat the bearings and in order to get out of the road he had to stay in the throttle to get off, the motor literally locked up solid when it came to a stop.

So its got a replacement motor/injector replacement with 25k on it. Truck has 151k miles on it.

What do you guys think?

I think it's a good deal $ 14K with a pretty new motor in it, if I were looking for another truck I would buy that one... unless it looks trashed or the body was rough.

Nothing is wrong with the 01 LB7. In fact I believe that are the best trucks outta there. I love mine. As long as you fill up at a truck stop to get better fuel that smaller stations and change the fuel filters often, then you are fine. Actually you would think that that is the best truck you ever had.
Trust me.

I decided to go with an '02 (even though i could have gotten an '01 for a coupld thoughsaind less) simply because of two things, it had 30K less miles AND that extra year on the injector warranty was worth it to me. Remeber, injector warranty is not just 200K miles, it also runs out after 7 years...

In my mind the extra couple thousand was worth less miles and an extra year under warranty.

If you can get the paper work that it is associated this the replacement motor so you have it for your records, make sure you get them from your friend. I believe $14K for a truck like that is a decent deal.
Good luck to ya...

Assuming that truck was 1 year old when the motor was replaced:

Would the MOTOR have the 200K/7year injector warranty (so that truck would be covered 225K/8year)

OR

Does the warranty follow the date of the truck reguardless of the replaced motor?!?!

If he gets and extra 25K/1 year, that is a really good deal IMO... anyone know?!?

nope!!!!my engine got swapt with a new one at 42,000 miles and the warranty is on the miles on the truck and not the engine.

Another factor in your decision is that it is a friend of yours. That could be a big plus. You know your friend. Is he meticulous about maintaining his vehicles or does he only change oil when the oil pressure warning light comes on? It's great peace of mind to me if I know a vehicles past.
