Hi, we are new to the forum. Our names are Roger and Jennifer, we have a 1994 GMC 3500 HD SL with a 6.5 engine and a 4L80E transmission. The motor had only minor problems that did not affect the performance and the transmission was in very good shape and was very strong. Not even slipping a little!!

Our truck got stuck in sugar sand. My truck was towed, and prior to it being towed, someone decided to rip all of the wiring from under the steering column, cut some of the wires that seem to be ground wires, drill out the ignition and toss our keys.

I had a locksmith change the ignition. The batteries were completely dead, it took 2 days of charging to even get it started. Upon starting the truck we noticed, when we depress the brake, we now have parking lights that come on. I'm not sure if maybe some wires were crossed while the locksmith had the steering column apart. I'm wondering if that could be the problem with the parking lights. There are also no turn signals either. We also noticed the transmission has no reverse at all, it has 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear when its cold. When it warms up the only gear it has is 2nd. Not to mention we no longer have to depress the brake to shift out of park. The truck has a 7 way trailer lighting hook up. A trailer braking system was added. There used to be a lift gate on the rear of the truck, that is no longer there. We have a inverter toggle switch near the steering column that I do not believe is connected.

There were 3 wires that were cut under the steering column. Two were light blue and one was red. I tracked the 3 wires through the firewall and into the engine. All three wires look to be grounds. The valve cover on the driver side has 2 brackets that have been bolted to the second and third bolt on the valve cover. The 2 light blue wires are grounded to the first bracket and the red is bolted to the second bracket.
I was told by a few transmission shops, no electrical problem would cause reverse to completely go. They said it needed to be completely rebuilt. I did get under the truck and all of the wiring harnesses seem to be all connected.

I'm still trying to figure out the wiring problem with the brake lights and parking lights, and if those 3 wires are grounds or even needed.
I would like to know if there is supposed to be a safety switch which keeps the shifter from going into reverse?
If so where would I find that switch?
I would also like to know if there is any other possibility of the transmission having an electrical problem or if it needs to be rebuilt?
Does anyone know if the inverter switch was used for the lift gate?
And finally, any ideas on where to start looking for the brake and parking lights issue.
I really need my truck running soon so any help would be appreciated very much.
If anyone has any info they can offer, it would be a great help.
Thanks in advance, Jennifer

There are two light blue wires under my steering column that are for turn signals, i believe they are the drivers front signals. There are two dark blue wires that would be the passenger side front signals. I have a dark blue and a red wire that pass through the firewall that are for my trailer brake controller, one is power the other goes to the trailer plug. Hope this helps some for you. Good luck.

Thanks, I'm tracing the inside wiring now. I think I figured out the signals, just left now with a white wire that has been spliced from the white wire coming out of my steering column. It is a live wire so it must be tracked. Any one know anything about wires that are used to install a lift gate?

I'm guessing you left the truck while it was stuck.

Reverse is a mechanical thing. No wires are needed for it to work.
Sounds like you burned up the trans trying to get out.
Smell the fluid on the dip stick. Does it stink?

Oh and next time your in sugar sand AIR DOWN.. 15psi is a good starting point.

Yes, the truck was left, but, there was no choice. It was in the custody of the local police. The picture on my avatar is the aftermath of whoever the police let it in. If you look close at the picture, I believe the guy standing on the driver side it who blew the trans. I'm pretty sure the transmission was deliberately blown. When the police "took custody" of the truck, it was running and only in the sand to the bottom of the rim. It was dug much further in the sand after they took over the truck. Thank you for the reply's.
