How difficult (expensive) is it to change the cv joint on a 04 2500 hd? I hear a growling in the left front.

It's about an hour job.Not to hard at all.About $200.00 at most autoparts stores if you do it yourself. You need a 34mm(I cant remember the exact size) socket to get the axle nut off.Jack up that tire and wiggle it back and forth to make sure it isn't a wheel bearing though.

It's not too bad if you change the whole CV shaft at one time. I changed one on my 2001 Silverado 1500 and changed both diff fluids in less than an hour. One thing though, it may seem like common sense, but before pulling the nut, you will need to put your truck in 4wd to make it easier.

Normally, a CV joint makes noise when you are turning. If it is grinding going down the road straight, then you might have a wheel bearing.

its not the cv joint thats expensive its the core charge on the old one so make sure you take it out and take it with you ive changed both of mine due to failure and the core charge was like $190.00 and the cv its self was only like $85.00 at oreilly auto parts.
