They actually are. I used them when my fuse box had a meltdown in another car and had to drive 20 miles. Problem is maybe one person out of 100 will have a clue what you're doing and what they mean...

Actually i know they are..at least as of 25 years ago they still were. When I was going for my drivers license my moms car had a signal out and I had to do hand signals during my test

Just think what a great convenience this was at the time, a wooden arm operated by pulleys inside the cab!

If that has 80K miles, it was a horribly abusive 80k.

My brothers has an 89 with just shy of 300k on it as a work truck and looks way better (not a diesel though).

I think they are deceptive...look how worn that steering wheel is.
