so i finally got my truck back from the tranny shot today. i was pretty excited. havent been able to drive her for quite a while now.

when i picked her up she wouldnt start. the tranny guy came out and said it had been like that ever since he pulled it into the shop. he came out with his jump box and starter fluid and she fired right up.

then i went to a basketball game wiht some of my friends at the college. when it was over i went out and tried to start her... same thing. nothing. so i went out and bought some jumper cables and starter fluid. tried jumping it and got nothign so i gave it a shot of fluid. stil nothing.

the batteries seem to be drained but they didnt even seem to get anythign from the jump. they are brand new batteries too. only 3 moths old.

what do you guys think? im going back up there tomorow with new glow plugs and gunna try again.

thanks

Don't use starting fluid, unless you want to install a new engine. not sure why the batteries are down, but they need to be put on charge for several hours at least, and then figure out whats up with the glowplugs. is the glow light coming on in the dash, can you hear the relay clicking?

ok... no more starting fluid... what about WD 40... i have heard that people use that instead?

is there any way that i could get enough charge on the batteries wiht a jump?

yeah teh GPs are on... it clicks and the light comes on. but im not sure how good they actually are.

a jump will get it started, but will not charge the batteries. they need to be built back up with at least a 3-4 hour charge on them. wd40 is alright to use i've heard, but if the glowplugs are working, and the batteries are up, you shouldn't need anything.

Well, something changed about the WD-40 formula. It doesn't seem to work anymore. Currently there isn't really a good starting fluid on the market that I know of. That is all right, though... It shouldn't be hard to get it going without it.

Was it cold outside when the truck was at the tranny shop?

What I'd do is check all the glow plugs. Use a test light to do it. Unplug the connector on the top of each glow plug. Clip the test light lead to the + battery terminal. Touch the probe to the spade terminal on the top of the glow plug you want to test... If the light turns on, the plug is good. If it doesn't, the plug is bad. Test all eight.

The slow cranking could be caused by a number of things besides the batteries... Like a bad starter (or starter solenoid) that was overheated trying to crank a truck that wouldn't start. If that was the case it wouldn't crank any better with a jump.

Hope this helps! :)

sierra... thanks. that does help.

yes it was just getting cold while the truck was at the shop it has been there for about 3 weeks now. when i took it there it was around 50 or so and has been dropping ever since to below freezing the past few nights.

the GPs are coming out anyway. i have been meaning to put in some new ones.

if that doesnt help then i guess i will start checking the starter and solenoid.

the batteries are out charging now. do i need to charge them both separately while they are in the truck? or will one do it?

also i have the block heater plugged in so maybe that wll help it out.

thanks again.

It is fine to hook the charger up to one battery. It should charge both batteries when you hook it up to one. Just remember that it will take significantly longer to charge up since you are charging two batteries at once...

Let us know what happens with freshly charged batteries and good glow plugs...
