Hello.....I just bought a 98 silverado that has a clunk sound when revving the engine and after it runs a few minutes it starts smoking. Someone said it has a broken crankshaft.

Looking at the pulleys they dont wiggle. Can I put a wrench on them and turn it and watch the flywheel for lack of movement.

What steps should I go through to diagnose the problem.

Please tell us a little more about the 98' (1500,2500,3500) 2 or 4wd and any mods

Might be just a bad outer crankshaft pulley that’s clanking back and forth.That’s the first thing I’d check before moving onto something else.This pulley is known to make noise when it fails.

You need to go under the truck to see the crank pulley with the skid plate removed (if exist).
