Any idea if I damaged anything...mainly my IP...if the fuel filter came out black? I guess it should have been changed sooner?

Should I change it when it still looks clean or just go according to miles regardless.

Thanks.

I change mine 3-4 times per year regardless of what it looks like. About every 2nd to 3rd oil change. I look for them on ebay where they are WAAAAAY cheaper than buying them from Canadian Tire or Napa.

if the filter was black that means it stopped the badness from getting to the IP. So you should be fine. Change it every few oil changes or so. I change mine every 12-15000 miles myself.

Like Scrufdog said I do mine about every 15k miles unless I get a noticeable drop in MPG, then I change it sooner.

Have you been running any type of fuel additive to perhaps cause the darkness of the filter? Maybe oil.

As for damaging anything,,,, I say no.

A black filter sounds like it's doing its job. I change mine every 15K miles. Diesel isn't the cleanest fuel in the world, but a good filter is great insurance. I occasionally treat a tank with a biocide. I also throw in a gallon of biodiesel with each tank for increased lubrication.

Might sound a little extreme but I change my fuel filter every oil change, Which is 4000 kms. Cant put a cost on maintaining your truck.

I don't know what you pay for a filter.......mine was $47.00 at the GM dealership. OUCH.

That would put my synthetic oil-$80.00
oil filter-$12.00
fuel filter-$47.00
--------
$139.00 total for one service job.
Next time it's Ebay.

A black filter is normal if there is black stuff in the tank.

That means it's working.

If you get a fuel gauge and change your filter when it actually needs it you could save enough to pay for the gauge.

Black stuff in the tank could be cleaned out. Then your filters will also last longer.

I buy the WIX filter from local parts store @ 23.99 each. I would like to find a site Vendor that would be willing to sale a case of say 12 at a discount price as long as buy the whole case ;)

I buy them 4 at a time and even with shipping they end up costing me less than $20 Canadian. I've seen them as cheap as $11 Canadian plus shipping.

Even Canadian Tire is cheaper than the dealer at $36 each. But that's no big surpise....being cheaper than the dealer.

Here is one set of pics from one I dissected http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23716

Consider a frame pre filter to sift out the heavy stuff for you, a visit to WIX or Baldwins, or racors site and you will see that the 5 micron in our engine bay is really designed as a final filtration device, we/GM are really asking a lot for it do keep it all out.

Including the stuff a 10, 20, 30 micron is supposed to keep out when used as a primary filter. The Racor 10micron on my frame rail is going on 3 years, vac DP alarm has not come on, and looks ancient with a rusty outside but insides are still doing their job, as I've yet to set the alarm on the 5 micron filter either.

Sounds like you guys are buying from the wrong dealership. I am not sure what I can say in here about my store. I was selling on ebay, but there fees made it hard to make any money, that tells you how cheap I was selling the stuff. I had seen great comments on this website about our ebay store. Could a moderator contact me about what I can do about helping you guys out?
Thank You
