I need some help or point me in the right direction on what could be the problem. I have been having a problem in that we can not get the truck timed because the inability to clear a Code 88. This has been this way for at least 6 months. Well now the IP failed (irratic throttle, run away a couple of times at full throttle) and I figured that this has been the problem all along. So I ordered a brand new pump, installed it and I now get codes 34 and 88. When cold it starts like a flooded gasser.. chug, chug, chug, lots of white smoke but eventually clears up. It runs "ok" but not great.
Few things to mention:
  • It has been starting hard for a few months. It has been getting progressively worse since last spring. It used to be now and then starting hard but lately it is every day.
  • The SES light comes on at about 2000 rpm and stays on until you shut it off.
  • After clearing the codes the Code 88 immediately comes back without the truck even running. (cleared with paper clip - simultaneously depressing the brake and accelerator pedals )
I do not have a scanner to set the timing or even know where it is set at. I would imagine the timing is out and causing the 34 (maybe). I will be going to Heath and have him set it. My concern is that I can not clear the code 88 prior to even trying to have the timing set.

What would cause a code 88 without even having the engine running?

Thanks for any help.

When you set the timing, the code 88 will go away.

Let Bill look at it - he'll know what to do, in any event.

Well Bill could not time my truck because he couldn't get rid of the code 88. He said my pump was turned too much towards the drivers side - more than normal - for it to run half way decent. He thought it must be that my CAM key was haf sheared. So this weekend I tore into it and this is what I found. Half sheared cam key like he said... I thought I would share incase someone else has timing issues like mine.
