Can you run dyed fuel in a 1997 6.5L?? I have a truck just for off road, it is used on the ranch just for hauling fire wood. This truck is not street leagal, but is in stock config. I was just trying to see if it will mess anything up? Any info would help!

Thanks, P/K

It won't hurt it to run dyed fuel. High sulfur should not hurt it either.

Will it run on red yes, legal your call if running truly off road should be no problem, still use a additive for lubrication though would be my recommendation

Red & hiway Diesel produced today have same sulphur content, dye is only for tax free identification purposes, refiners are shifting to all low sulphur too costly to make/store 2 different fuels IIRC 2007 low sulphur rules come into play also

We have to fill out and turn in a federal fuel taxation form due to the vehicles having a tag. If it has a valid registration find out what the deal is where your at.

:exactly: It's only red so the DOT can tell that road tax hasn't been paid. Therefore, if your fuel is red and the truck is on the road they can fine you. A small amount will dye an entire tank, so even if you run it(red) once, and the tank wasn't fully emptied out-it will stay red for a while. Not to worry, I had access to off road fuel (low sulfer) often when I had my 6.5 and burned it most of the time.

Nope no sensor for the red dye yet.

The newer vehicles may have that feature.

The optical sensor in the ds4 injection pump will operate normally on dyed fuel.

Ha, funny thing happened. My truck went dry one day, I was running low and got lost WAY out in the boonies and the truck was past red and then started to studder. I went ahead shut it off and walked about three miles to find out WHERE I WAS. I saw a driveway a few hundred feet ahead and followed it down to a farm house. The farmer pulled out his truck and diesel tank, filled me up 5 gallons of red dye to get me back to a station.

On the trip to fuel up, I got a code, it was a 251 i think. Anyways, it was a code that said optic sensor or something. I think what it was is the optic eye picked up on the STRAIGHT red diesel and threw a code. I cleared it (always have my scanner in the truck) and right when I was about to fill up, it tripped the SES again. THen, after filling up, it was gone and I have never seen it again.

Red fuel in mine right now (leftover from Katrina off-road fuel ban being lifted). I ran red fuel part of the way down and all the way back when we went down to help. No issues.

(side note - dad runs red fuel in his '01 Dmax regardless of the laws - no issues)
