Hello,

I have a 1998 Chevy 1500 6.5l turbo diesel, 4X4 Automatic.

The problem is that my brake pedal is spongy and the front brakes engage on their own.

The first problem I had was that the front calipers both of them were wearing out the inside brake pads. The outside ones had 70% life in side ones were down to 10%.

I replaced the front calipers both of them, also the front rotors and pads. Bled the system while the truck was off starting from the rear passanger side finishing on the front drivers side. The brakes are still very spongy. Yesterday driving to work the front brakes started draging, to the point that they started smoking. The brake pedal was super firm and if you lightly tapped it the brakes would lock up. so I pulled over and towed the truck back home.

Does this sound like the master cylinder gone bad? Or is the hydraulic brake booster at fault. I do not have any oil leaking in the cab. I am not low on power steering fluid either.

Also when I was bleeding the system I had to pull on the brake pedal for it to come back up, and after a while it got firm but when the truck was running after they were still spongy, and locked up really fast at around half pedal pushed in. Not to sure what is going on.

Thank you

is it equipped with ABS?
If so. Then it could be a broken or worne hub bearing which will tell the sensor that it losing traction and thinks its a braking issue.

If not then power steering pump brake booster could be the culprit.

Hello,

Yes it has ABS, the wheel bearing is fine, just checked it this evening. Truck only has 90,000 miles and has been babied no heavy pulling.

Also what I have noticed is that when you bleed the brakes, there is pressure building up in the master cylinder brake resevoir, when you take of the cap the pressure releases. Not sure that the fluid container should presurize.

another thing to check is the rubber hoses. i helped another member here with a locked up brake caliper that was to hot you could not even touch the wheel rim for 30 minutes. replaced rotor and caliper still was locked up replaced hoses and everything worked fine.
