hello,

looking for some help. the last week, twice the message of "service brake system" displays and at the same time, the abs & brake indicators are also come on. this has happen when the truck is in park and not running. i start the truck and the above happens, it stays on until i park and turn off the engine. after a few minutes pass, i start the truck and all is normal, any thoughts, comments would be helpful, should i see a dealer?, my truck is a 04 chevy with d/a. thanks

I would start checking the speed sensors on the front wheels and the transfercase.

service brake system

I've had mine in twice now for the same problem, it is fairly random and of course the dealer says it doesn't happen when they look at it but they said the front left wheel sensor has flagged in the computer, when they checked it she was within tolerance?

That happened to our Trailblazer last winter. The parking brake lever got lifted slightly when backing out of the garage. We let the truck sit a bit and when we started it again the lights were off.

This morning I had the lights and warning come on in my HD. I didn't think I had touched the park brake when I got out but sometime I kick it. Anyway I drove to work with the lights and warning. When I got there I turned the truck off, let it sit for a few seconds and restarted it. This time no lights or warnings. Weird

I've seen this a couple of times recently also but only when it's been extremely cold out though, -10 and below.

I'm chalking up to the cold. If it happens in the spring when it warms up I'll start to get worried.

y'all are getting close ;)

low voltage. The EBCM (abs computer/module) draws a fair amount of power and is the first thing on the data bus to drop offline when battery power starts to die. If im working on my truck with the key on engine off, listening to the radio or whatnot, as soon as I hear "ding ding ding ding" and see "service break system" I know Im gonna need to find someone to jump start me

sometimes in the extreme cold it will do it right after you start the truck as well, the cold is hard on the batteries so when the starter drew all that current, there wasnt enough charge left in the batteries to keep the EBCM happy while the engine was starting. Let the truck run for 5 minutes or so to charge the batteries, then turn it off for 30 seconds, and restart it...the service brake system message should go away. If you are starting to have problems more often with it, its usually a dead giveaway that the batteries are getting close to the end of their lives. The EBCM's on these trucks (Delphi EBC325 if you cared :) ) are pretty reliable and the wheelspeed sensors are designed for rugged heavy duty use, so the chance that its an actual problem wth the ABS system is pretty slim. Almost always just a battery thing...

Electrical problems can cause ABS malfunctions, but chances are you'd have other symptoms (of electrical problems). If all else fails, check your batteries and maybe alt. How many miles on the '04?

Thanks for the info Ben.

Nice to know we have built in 'your batteries may going south' system in these trucks. :)

Fix is well documented on this site

A little bit of searching will show you that:

Clean the grounding lines (2 wires) on the cross member directly under the drivers feet, Undo the bolt, scrape it clean with wire brush or wire wheel, get a star washer and put it back together. Then finish off with a touch of undercoating.

i have this same problem with the brake light. it came on last night but the brakes and ABS seem to be working fine. the low voltage seems to make perfect sense though because ive also been having problems with my gauges not working on and off for a few weeks now and from searching around here ive found that can also be caused by low battery voltage and my batteries are original as far as i know so it all seems to add up,
